Former Member I love you for this comment. My sisters ex husband came out after ten years of marriage and two children too. It knocked the stuffing out of her and made her feel like her whole life was a fraud. She didn’t trust her own judgement for a long time. Still affects her ten year later. She actually was on radio 1 newsbeat yesterday giving an interview from the Partners’s perspective. [ more ]
Yogi19 I truly hope Phillip finds peace now that he is able to “be himself”. My sympathy goes to his wife who has, unwittingly, been forced to live a lie until Phil felt able to come out. IMO, if someone is conflicted about their sexuality or afraid of coming out as gay, the last thing they should do is start a relationship with someone of the opposite sex. It seems like a selfish act to me and can only lead to heartache for the other person. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair I haven't been following the details particularly closely: has there been any indication as to how long he's considered himself to be gay, and how long his wife has known? By way of comparison, I've found myself thinking about the cyclist Graeme Obree a lot today. He's only a little younger than Schofield, and was also married with two children (although I don't think he'd been married as long as Phillip has). I saw an interview with him after he came out publicly (he'd told his family 6... [ more ]

Hacked??
Eugene's Lair Thanks for that insight, EL. I hadn't had a fake email for a little while, and then - like you - got one a couple of days ago. I didn't initially think too much about it, but I've just checked and it is indeed impersonating a friend's yahoo address... FWIW, the "real" second part of the address appears to be from Russia (though who really knows?) [ more ]

What do we make of this debacle?
Carnelian Arguably it stopped him becoming Prime Minister as he was pilloried by the Tory rags at the time for his dress sense. [ more ]
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing Just so. And that's why I refer to it as a debacle! [ more ]
Saint It probably made him unelectable - true, and the donkey jacket look was not good But ... it did not stop him rising to the top and becoming Labour leader [ more ]

Britain Divided Over Future of Monarchy
Baz I agree Renton [ more ]
Carnelian As a lefty, I'm instinctively anti-monarchy as I just can't morally or ethically support privilege by birth. That said, I'm in a minority and in a democracy, you have to go with the majority view on such matters where human rights aren't compromised. To me, the old argument of president Thatcher, president Blair, president Richard Branson or president Piers Morgan doesn't cut it. It would at least be democratically elected so even though they might be worse and more polarising, they would be... [ more ]
Saint I like the idea of a modern Monarchy - they are great figureheads for our country. Better than some 'Mayor' Extended family should be more involved not less [ more ]

HS 2.
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing The problem with HS2 (apart from the spiraling costs) is that the whole of the UK is paying for it, but it is only a small (relatively speaking) part of the country that will be using it. [ more ]
Carnelian I think you're right Roxanne and that's a valid point overall, but what HS2 looks like is a white elephant that's geared toward 'heads of' in the Midlands shaving minutes off their journey to head offices in London and making Birmingham as a suburb of London. I also think Brexit has polarised opinion greatly and independently of social media. Given that our traditional print press is horrendously biased to the right-wing, I think social media is more of a freedom rather than a straight... [ more ]
Saint I can see your point @Former Member I mean businesses who make up a lot of commuter miles. They don't need to travel. Video conferencing is so easy. [ more ]

Crazy Delicious - Channel 4
El Loro Got round to watching it. More style than substance so an inconsequential programme. Adam won in case those who gave up wanted to know the result. Jayde Adams, the presenter, was attempting to emulate presenters of Bake Off in particular but failed and just came across as inconsequential. If Channel 4 is thinking of getting her as Sando Toksvig's replacement that would be a huge mistake. There has been criticism by viewers of portraying the judges as food gods with some saying it's... #MEGXIT
Eugene's Lair Although the public debate at the moment is concentrating on what Harry and Meghan are losing, I think it's important to remember that it works both ways. As a Royal commentator pointed out on the BBC today, Harry and Meghan leaving is a huge loss to the Royal "brand". It's widely recognised that the couple are popular with sections of the public that the Royal family traditionally has difficulty connecting with. The family - and the Queen in particular - would ideally like the couple (and I... [ more ]

New Bake Off host - vote now
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Not got anything against her per se, she's just not my kind of comedian. I also preferred Mr Fry in the QI. But then again, I was pretty pleased when Sue and Mel left. Apart from Noel, who's off beat comedy is more up my street, I have never really liked the humour served up (see what I did there ) by the non-judges. Reading between the lines, it sounds like Sandi may have been part of the problem. [ more ]
Saint Why - don't you like her? [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Why have another presenter, let Noel do it himself. But my vote would be for Victoria Coren-Mitchell if I had to choose one. But I am quite pleased she is leaving, Sandi that is. [ more ]

General Election 2019
Carnelian I don't think so, the 'middle left' has to lick the boots of Murdoch and the Daily Mail, like Blair did. The problem with Blair was he had to tell Sun and Mail readers that we could have all the good things without raising taxes. So we had PFI deals where the private sector ran rings around the government and rinsed the taxpayer. Banking deregulation, mortgage deregulation, a Labour government that didn't build any homes because it was shit scared it would stop 'free money' from property... [ more ]
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing The situation's the same with the EU referendum. Some are saying we need a new reterendum to check on the current nationwide feeling, while others are saying NO, we've voted out. It's effectively the other way round with the Scottish referendum, but the basic principle is the same! . [ more ]

Andrew Marr took Johnson apart this morning.
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing To be honest, I have no real idea what constitutes left, right, or centre! To me it is just rubbish, more rubbish and even more rubbish! With very occasionally a faint glimmer of something bordering on sanity which, unfortunately, is very quickly buried under the crushing heap of insane and uncaring rubbish! [ more ]
Videostar We'll have to agree to disagree here I think. Their "comedy" panel shows are full of lefty (woke) metropolitan types who look down their noses at the rest of us. [ more ]
