Politician Proposes 6pm Curfew For Men To 'Make Women Feel Safer'

Baz Spot on Eugene [ more ]
Eugene's Lair I don't like the idea of pepper spray being made legal, and certainly not in some selective way (although that said, the police are exempt). Attack alarms are available, of course, but again this is all still putting the onus on the woman as a "potential victim", rather than trying to deal with the problem at a societal level... [ more ]

Feck, it's one big Orwellian nightmare.
Carnelian I recently tried to log into my Samsung account. Did the usual, I'd forgotten the password. Samsung isn't exactly a service I use daily or even monthly so I've not committed the password to memory. Did all the usual stuff, "forgotten password", they sent an email with an authentication code something like GA7290X (not that but it's illustrative) but the page only allowed a numeric keypad for input. I think these systems are specifically designed to make you entirely give up. [ more ]
velvet donkey So am I and nearly a year ago online food shopping I was asked for a password. I was out of date. It was resolved via a phonecall. But then you could get through to them. All customer services are fecked now. [ more ]

Captain Tom
Eugene's Lair To be fair, Capt. Tom's fundraising was never intended to fill a need, but was started as a purely personal "Thank You" for his hip operation - a bit of a grander gesture than sending the nurses a box of chocolates, with the added bonus that he got to exercise that hip. IMO, the public response to him (and more obviously to Marcus Rashford later on) always had a bit of an "edge" to it, and was - by and large - in the tacit knowledge that this really was something that the Government should... [ more ]
Carnelian The thing about Capt Sir Tom Moore is that he's a household name now but in 15 to 20 years' time his name will be a pub quiz question. Celebs and MPs are bandwagon-jumping to virtue signal. Capt. Tom's charity drive should not have been needed if we funded the NHS adequately. The amount of taxpayers' money Bozo has thrown at his inept and unqualified private-sector cronies during the pandemic would have been far better spent funding the NHS. A fitting tribute to Capt. Sir Tom Moore would be... [ more ]

Carnelian Easy for me. I hate the Tories more than any other party, man and boy! Obviously, there are worse parties like Britain First or Ukip but they are a mere existential threat. I've given up on politics. The defeat of Corbyn and election of Bozo taught me that the British electorate and the UK working class are just beyond rational understanding and help. [ more ]

Devi Shridar.
Carnelian What's she supposed to have done Velvet? Being SNP is way down my list of reasons to object to someone. If I lived in Scotland too right I'd be voting to get out of the UK! [ more ]
velvet donkey She's getting found out now. Airy fairy twee stating the obvious. Lifestyle guru - gimme a break. I could do it. Narcissist was the best comment I read and I'd say that was a pretty good summation. And that came from a lady. Virology - she doesn't even have a medical degree. Still she's SNP. An American. Doesn't take a lot to beat that as a Govt. advisor. Just fecking blank her out. [ more ]

Carnelian On another point, YouTube has even been found to be (obviously inadvertently but still...) hosting "softcore paedophile" videos and member comments. "Softcore" child sexualisation been alleged and not denied by YouTube. The advantage to nonce YouTube account holders is they look down the comments sections to other nonce comments and can easily check out the profiles of other paedos on YouTube, check their likes and form a ring. They should get rid of their "Jimmy Saviles" before they got rid... [ more ]
Carnelian Actually, it's worked in my favour. Some of my rants were drunken angry self-righteous lefty ones and some were sort of embarrassing. However, none breached their rules as they claim. I don't know what my bosses would have thought if they'd have seen them, freedom of speech and all that but still... So they're all deleted without me taking the trouble myself! And I can still see their content if I use incognito mode anyway. They and their content providers can no longer monetise me. Ha ha! [ more ]
Carnelian Hope you're keeping ok Velvet. If it's any consolation. All my political rants and disagreements on here, well they were tenfold on YouTube and they've closed my account. This is the outfit that platforms Isis beheading videos, "happy slapping" videos, pro-anorexia channels and far-right channels. They are supposed to give 3 warnings but gave none. However, I can live with that and I don't really care if I can't comment on YouTube content. The thing is they are Yank imperialist corpo fascist... [ more ]

Joe Biden's Inauguration
Carnelian I hate to reply with a "Beatles did it first" as "Beatles did it first" is usually from Beatles fans who think music started and ended with The Beatles, but... The Beatles "Butcher cover" from 1967 [ more ]
Carnelian I'm not a fan of Joe Biden as I'd have prefered Bernie Sanders but after four years of Trump, an establishment centrist might be the ideal POTUS to unite a country that has been radicalised by a weird combination of right-wing politics, mixed with wealth-entitled sexual and misogynistic promiscuousness - the sort the Christian right used to absolutely despise but have ignored because Trump played towards their general aims. Trump supporters have stormed Congress !
Carnelian Yes, so brave of them when he's almost at the exit door. It took them years to ban hate-preacher Katie Hopkins when almost every single one of her tweets was racist. Likewise, Ukip vermin, Gerard Batten, who turned Ukip from a generally racist party to an outright unapologetic Muslim hating party. They sat on their hands when Trump said: "When the looting starts the shooting starts" when he told the white supremacist thug Proud Boys to "stand back and standby" and when he called Mexicans... Robert Peston.
Carnelian 👍 💯
Carnelian Robert Peston built his reputation for being a dogged critic of the Labour Party and its economic policies. He made very valid points of that government but as soon as the Tories got in all that crusading noble journalism evaporated and he became toothless. Establishment shill indeed. And what is it about this news/personality type, Peston and Jeremy Vine, Paxman also, who feel they always have to shout the end of their sentences? [ more ]

Michael Apted: TV documentary pioneer and film-maker dies aged 79

Carnelian I've left the Labour Party - had enough of Sir Keir Stalin, his hatred of the Labour left, his authoritarian approach to party debate and his disgusting scapegoating treatment of Jeremy Corbyn. Been voting Labour in almost election, by-election, council election and Euro election since the 80s. Probably missed 3 minor polls in all that time. Voted for Clegg tactically in 2010 (much to my eternal shame) but apart from that serious lack of judgement, it's been Labour every time. However, I... [ more ]

El Loro The Powell/Pressburger film is a classic as you say. Rumer Godden was born in India and lived there during her early childhood. Another of her books "The River" was also set in India and was about a teenager's coming of age. It was made into a film by Jean Renoir in 1951. I've never seen it but it's worth watching if you ever get the chance. It's one of Martin Scorcese's favourite films and was a major influence on Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited". Incidentally, the teenager's father... [ more ]
