Knock Knock - Who's There? - Labour
pirate1111 tories are not living & breathing, they run on 2 AA batteries [ more ]
Carnelian Only got the police thing to vote for so won't bother with that. Hopefully Corbyn will give the vested media interests and Blairite malcontent red-Tories a bloody nose. Why is it we can have a PM who hawks arms to the vile Saudi regime, which Labour want stopped, yet the Tory media are spinning Labour as terrorist sympathisers and that spin is generally playing well with 'the public'. The abysmal standard of political discourse in this country is Orwellian. [ more ]
Cold Sweat We've not had anyone knock our door AFAIK. I did spend some time with the guys running the local Labour "stall" in town on Saturday (2 of whom are elected councillors) and the mood was positive. [ more ]

Happy Star Wars Day!
Former Member The films didn't make much impression on me but I remember the excitement + all the tat that came out when it was released. I loved my Star Wars watch. Also the wee boy next door was always showing off his toys So I nicked his Hans Solo b.t.w. That's the only thing I've ever stolen apart from when a local gang of millies [ Belfast version of scalllies] took me under their wing + we all shoplifted an ice-lolly for a dare Although that shop [Simpsons! Yes you! ] had rip off prices + I more... [ more ]

Pensions....
El Loro EC, yes £1,000 for standard rate tax payers, £500 for higher rate taxpayers, and nil for anyone who had income over £150k. For those on lowish income, they might be able to make use of the 0% rate band on interest up to £5,000 and that's in addition to the £1,000. Those exclude interest from ISAs which can be ignored for tax purposes. Retired people are the most likely to benefit. Someone with pension income of £11,000 and interest income of £6,000 would pay no tax - the pension income is... [ more ]
Garage Joe I think that tax free bag of sand interest is right across the board covering all of your non ISA stuff like acçounts and bonds. [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I am not really surprised that they could consider raising the retirement age again in the future. We are living longer so I guess they (whoever they are at the time) need to fund pensions longer. I must say that I currently fall into the group that will retire at 68, but I bet it will rise to 70 before I get there. I have to say that ISA's (the cash variety) are a bit of a poor investment at the moment given the shockingly low interest rates. I will admit to my 3 year fixed cash ISA at 3%... [ more ]

Garage Joe Suffice to say we have a long history of spending NYE in RHB and a decade or so ago Mrs Jer's friend and I were last men standing. She suggested that we randomly first foot a few houses. I have to say that Martin and Norma were very good about it. [ more ]

Are you non-binary
Garage Joe El Loro's post reminds of a rather amusing little thing Mrs Jer used to say way back when ....... She offered her honour he honoured her offer and all night long it was honour and offer. [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Are you referring to the Binary number system or some other binary I'm not aware of? As regards to superstition, I don't think I am. When my team wins I don't take the same route to the game, having the same coffee at the same place or same lunch etc. [ more ]
Saint I'm not very superstitious - so does that make me simply stitious? Seriously though . . . regardless of how you see yourself - so long as you have a good heart, that's all that matters [ more ]

Happy Anniversary, Gaga!
Xochi Late to the party as usual. Wow! Seven years eh?! Isn't that when we get an itch? I'll always come home here though. Thank you lovely Lori, Rosemary and all at Seattle (and Dave if he reads this) and I echo those comments for rescuing us and putting up with us with such tolerance over all this time. Well done us all! [ more ]

Adverts on You Tube
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Regarding your first point, have you seen my new video hosting website? www.metoob.co.uk And your second point, Shhhhhhhh [ more ]
Carnelian they're not going to give away content with no revenue stream. They'd go bust if they did. That's capitalism for you! I don't think YouTube should be nationalised and if so it would be nationalised by the American gov't and they'd expect a return for the US taxpayer, so we're stuck with adverts. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair My view essentially comes back to the old line regarding social media: "If you're not paying for it, you're not the customer: you're the product.", so I don't really see how we can complain about it. Although if enough users start to get annoyed with it, I can potentially see a competitor stepping in, though... Haven't given it a lot of thought yet, but I did wonder though: a lot of FMs (including myself) post YouTube clips here: is that going to be a problem in the future, seeing as Gaga... [ more ]

Doctor Who
El Loro Peter Capaldi has revealed how a theatre trip to see the new Doctor Who companion turned into a test of his acting skills. The actor went to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in early April - before Pearl Mackie was announced as his new co-star. When he was invited to meet the cast after the show, Capaldi and Mackie had to pretend they had never met. In reality they'd already filmed a top secret scene together with the Daleks. ... [ more ]

Former Member I was going to comment...unbelievable but......... [ more ]
Dame_Ann_Average so transparent it's laughable, he co-wrote this in 2005 Jeremy Hunt co-authored a policy pamphlet that called for the NHS to be replaced by an insurance system. The 2005 policy book, called Direct Democracy: An Agenda For A New Model Party, was a collection of writings authored by a group of Tory MPs. Amongst other ideas, the book contained a blueprint for replacing the NHS with an insurance market system – and called for the private sector to be brought in. ... [ more ]

Tonight I have done something that I have not been able to do until today ...AGAIN
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I think I saw him briefly in an interview not so long back and he looked quite frail then. More sad news on an already bad week with Victoria and Prince. He directed some of my favourite Bonds amongst 18 other films, which included Funeral in Berlin to name just one. [ more ]
El Loro Sad news today that Guy Hamilton the film director has died, He was 93. He directed Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, and The Man with the Golden Gun. Xochi Blimey Donks! I've found your link and wonder how I've never seen this before! Thanks muchly. One of my best buddies used to have to work in the USSR as was and this reminds me so much of her, admittedly limited experience of working there. Put it this way, fruit and vegs were impossible to find to eat. Unless it was cabbage. And her experience of how the drunks In Moscow were often dug of snow, usually dead, following stealing antifreeze from cars are legion! [ more ]

Gareth Thomas, Blake's 7 actor, dies aged 71
Carnelian I never really thought the show was the same after the Blake character left. I felt the series lacked something after Gareth Thomas left the show. The Avon character, Paul Darrow, never struck me as an equal replacement as the lead character but maybe it was because I was young and didn't like the moral ambiguity of his character. I remember a series called Morgan's Boy shortly afterwards, he was good in that too. RIP Gareth Thomas [ more ]
