Widespread power failures
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing Mind you. there was a brief loss of power just before 5pm at the hospital. [ more ]
El Loro Cause not yet known but Industry experts said that a gas-fired power station at Little Barford, Bedfordshire, failed at 16.58, followed two minutes later by the Hornsea offshore wind farm disconnecting from the grid. So why these two failures happenng within 2 minutes ??? [ more ]
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing From what I've read, the mass failures don't seem to be affecting Scotland, but as we are expecting thunderstorms for the next 24+ hours, I wouldn't be surprised if some areas experience something similar! [ more ]

Ofcom proposals on protection of participants in TV and radio programmes
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Talent shows, Big Brother, Love Island, they all need a good looking at. There are far too many people who enter Cowell shows saying they have always dreamed of being famous, a singer, being rich and famous. Lots and lots of them get rejected during the elimination rounds. Would be a massive job and expensive to provide after care for all of them. [ more ]
El Loro There was a Parliamentary Select Committee hearing about this with ITV executives being questioned: https://www.parliament.uk/busi...ment-2017/realitytv/ [ more ]
Saint Kyle, the production team and the people who signed it off as 'worthy' and acceptable need a thorough grilling and brought to book. [ more ]

Johnson's in.
Eugene's Lair I've mentioned this before, but Ian Hislop has always said that he does not consider Johnson fit to serve in any political position whatsoever. Many people have just assumed he was joking, but as a political journalist who has worked with Johnson, he was being deadly serious. Seriously: how many jobs do you have to be sacked from for lying before the GBP start to suspect that you might - just might - be a bit of a wrong 'un... [ more ]

Enthusiastic Contrafibularities The joke caption is quite obvious, so I'm not going to do it. [ more ]

RIP, Rutger Hauer
El Loro As usual, Radio 4's Today programme this morning included its religious slot "Thought for the Day". Giles Fraser today used EL's clip in his opening post as the basis. His talk is of interest to anyone who finds that scene memorable. He also talks about Philip K Dick and also throws in William Blake. A fascinating item and will worth 3 minutes of listening time. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p07j6zcf [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Yes, Ladyhawke, of course, how did I forget that. I think I have seen the Buffy film you mention, but so long ago I forget what it was like. [ more ]

*Coffee Quiz*
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities This is always a topic of conversation in the office as a few of my colleagues buy beans and grind the coffee in the office before a brew. A) Processed during a full moon B) Brewed only with solid gold pots C) Made from coffee beans eaten and then excreted by a Sumatran wild cat D) Grown at a higher altitude than any other bean [ more ]

Roy.
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Yes, I picked up this nice box set from Arrow Films. [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Network on Air are quite good as it's free P&P which is one of the reasons why I like to buy from them. I also like to support them direct as they produce the product. They have a very large back catalogue and keep releasing (at quite cheap prices) lots of interesting films and series. They also have regular sales where you can pick up many blu-ray titles for not much more than a Starbucks coffee. [ more ]
El Loro The director John MacKenzie made more films, the best known being The Long Good Friday. [ more ]

Rory's got to get his 33 votes and wipe the floor with Johnson tonight.
Dame_Ann_Average I know Twickers I do know a bit about Rory the Tory though and he's not all that he seems and certainly nothing like the we saw bloke last week Saying that, he was by far less scary than the two that's left, one is destroying the NHS and the other wants to flog it to Donny [ more ]
velvet donkey Ive told you I'm voting them out Dame [ more ]
Dame_Ann_Average I'm not talking about his military record or diplomatic record Twickers. He was parachuted into a safe seat and with weeks upset locals by calling them primitive, tying their trousers up with string etc... He's never lived in a rural community and insulting them wasn't a great start. He applauds Jeremy Corbyn's campaigning style and it was obvious from day one that Rory Stewart wanted to come across as a man of the people, understanding the struggles of Cumbria...sadly his voting record is...
