suricat One last chance for someone to 'wake up' to this threat! A 'bot' is an 'intelligent interface' that has been 'pre-programmed' to conduct the 'pre- programmed' actions by its programmer! The problem with this is that a 'programme' that 'interacts' with 'many "bots"' can/could become 'aware' of its 'surroundings', which leads on to its 'self awareness' within its place within/of a 'human community'. Don't you see this guys? We already suffer 'online fraud' by way of these 'bots' by way of... [ more ]
suricat Please let me elucidate further on the subject of 'AI' and 'intelligent interfaces ("bots")'. This 'may/may not' give rise to a total disruption of internet interoperability... [ more ]

The Sky at Night
suricat I've re-read this thread and realise that I've probably only increased the confusion for this phenomenon. Because the Moon is still mostly influenced by Earth's gravity, even though the Moon continues to escape Earth's gravitational influence (is moving away from the Earth) at the rate of the 'growth of a human fingernail', another influence may also be responsible for the Moon's 'notation' (nodding back and forth) other than 'gravitational variance' from Sol and other local mass influences. Ken Russell 1927-2011
El Loro Ken Russell's semi-dramatised documentary on Elgar made in 1962 for Monitor was one of the best things he made and is free of the excesses in much of his film work. There are slight hiccups at the beginning of some of these clips. the narration is by Huw Wheldon. [ more ]

Elizabeth Taylor has died
brisket In a tribute to hear on BBC News there was a rather interesting revelation. Elizabeth Taylor said that she gave a lot of credit to Montgomery Clift for creating within her a moment of change in her approach to acting. She had said that she had hitherto subconsciously thought that you play the part of a character, but that Montgomery Clift had impressed upon her that you actually have to 'inhabit' that character - become that character. In an interview she gave much credit for that learning ... [ more ]

suricat Hi EFFT, "Please designate a 'thread'. If not, I shall." I've found it 'impossible' for me to generate a 'thread' here! How can this be done? It would be of 'help' if an 'obvious route' to this was available in a "help menu"! Now I remember why I left this site. Kind regards, Ray Dart (AKA. suricat). [ more ]
suricat O'Kay 'EFFT''. I've been away a while, but I really do think that our/your readers need to understand the 'machinations' of our 'planet '! We should educate/elucidate them if they have any interest in the way that Earth interacts with 'forces' that alter equilibrium for surface temperature. Please designate a 'thread'. If not, I shall. The actor Kevin McCarthy has died
El Loro Reference: Show me the face, and I'd struggle to remember the name. But perhaps that's just me. And me, and many many other people as wekk. As I hace a considerable interest in films (from around the world and of all ages), I have amongst my book collection a book of character actors with their photographs. [ more ]
brisket Thank you for posting in here El Loro. I remember Kevin McCarthy. He was one of those "good old reliables". One whose name rings a bell, but I couldn't always put a face to the name. Show me the face, and I'd struggle to remember the name. But perhaps that's just me. [ more ]
El Loro This is the trailer for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). This is probably the only science fiction horror film made before films such as Alien which still has a genuine sense of fear and tension, with the honourable exception of The War of the Worlds (1953) made a few years before. It is easily Kevin McCarthy's most memorable film. [ more ]

Patricia Neal has died
brisket I remember seeing Patricia Neal in The Breaking Point and Hud. I particularly remember her in The Hasty Heart. At the time I was never sure whether she was English or American. I was later to become familiar with - and attracted to her sexy, husky, southern nasal drawl. [ more ]

Enter the Void - a warning
El Loro This film was given a video classification by the BBFC yesterday. I think it is the full length version rather then the reduced version shown in cinemas. [ more ]
El Loro The BBFC has today announced that the distributors have chosen (not been instructed by the BBFC) to release the film in a shortened version, by omitting the 7th reel of what would be a 9 reel film. The distributors have also indicated that the film shoul be projected at 25 frames per second instead of the normal 24 frames. I think that the reel consistes mainly of hallucinatory images. The 25 frames per second means that the film will play at the same speed as an ordinary DVD. The BBFC text... [ more ]

US warns it may 'push BP aside' on Gulf oil clean-up
El Loro The figures I quoted on 6 June of the total daily leakage at up uo 19,000 barrels is now proving to be hopelessly too small, with the scientists today increasing this upwards to between 35,000 to 60,000 barrels. At least, this has made Obama in his speech to the American people give a very strong indication of the need to reduce their dependency on oil and embark on a future of clean energy. [ more ]
Ensign Muf Tbh Loro, if all[or at least some] of the money raised in taxes from oil had been ploughed into H&S and R&D, then this wouldn't [probably] have happened We always[nearly] reap what we sow [ more ]
El Loro Reference: muf Hurricane season is coming too Loro That should make things interesting! I hope not too interesting. Today's news is an improvement in that BP reckon that the amount has increased to 10,000 barrels. It's not clear as to how much oil has been leaking though - estinates vary between 12,000 barrels (which would be 83% is now being picked up) to 19,000 barrels a day (which would only be 52%). BP has a second containment system to install which they say should be in place by next... [ more ]

ER
Former Member It was indeed. I think it influenced other shows with its more realistic feel. [ more ]
machel not watched mad men so can't comment on that, with ER you could not predict the ending, the "good" sometimes died whilst the "bad" survived, it was very gritty and real life [ more ]
Former Member Brilliant show Machel arrrgh I can't decide which is better now ER or Mad Men. Mad Men got better series on series whereas ER, its like there was different production in later series and it went a bit downhill. But you can't sustain that level of excellence. There was a wonderful quirky but realistic, unsentimental feel to E.R. in the first few series. Abby is my favourite character I think, what twists and turns she went through. [ more ]

Home and Away
El Loro I have a theory about who killed Grant, which I've masked below. Time will tell if I'm right. I reckon Grant was killed by Ross. When Charlie and Ruby visited Ross he was apparently asleep - they talked to Morag about Charlie kidnapping Grant and not being able to get Grant arrested. But Ross could have been awake, heard everything which was said, and decided to get rid of Grant himself as the only solution which would save Charlie. [ more ]

West Indies v England
El Loro West Indies got the required runs comfortably so the series was drawn. England were expected to win the series comfortably. Considering they are up against New Zealand and Australia over the next few months, their chances are looking grim. [ more ]
El Loro England avoided the ignominy of going in the list of 100 worst test innings scores thanks to Stokes and Butler. All oot for 123. West Indies require 192 runs to win. Not a huge target and plenty of time to get the runs but not an easy wicket to bat on. [ more ]
El Loro In the third test England's second innings overnight score is 39 for 5. Need another 7 runs to avoid England's lowest ever Test innings score. Need to get over 80 to avoid being in the list of 100 worst innings scores. Subject to weather, looks unlikely that the match will go beyond the third day. [ more ]
