Summer 2009 Weather
Former Member the sun is awfully quiet... more rain methinks! However, here's one for all you falsifiers out there... If it really is down to sunspots, then we should also see temperatures in line with those of the little ice age (or at least approaching them). I wonder why we aren't? [ more ]
El Loro And Piers Corbyn's forecast on Radio 4 today for August was deluges and floods throughout the month with the worst in the West and North. The most pessimistic forecast I have ever heard. [ more ]
El Loro The Met Office has had to revise their summer forecast today. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/sc...nal/2009/summer.html Oddly enough, they think the rainfall will be at or above average. [ more ]

Obama, AIPAC and Iran
Lord Atiladhun One remembered Barrack Obama's speech to the AIPAC faithful at a conference, prior to his election. Boy, it was cringe worthy of the 3rd kind. It was then I knew that Obama wasn't going to depart from previous US policy regarding Isreal ie occupation of Palestine, Golan Heights and its treatment of preventing Aids being delivered to the Palestianians. My take on the above is purely based on humanity values, nothing to do with organised religion or race. Apparently, Saudi arabia (remember... [ more ]

The Asylum
Ensign Muf Interesting banner in my local OXFAM shop window, it reads; " CLIMATE CHANGE KILLS!! "] Now I assume that they mean AGW induced 'climate change' and that they don't mean 'people whom have met they're end whilst investigating climate change'; So, how many confirmed AGW 'Kills' have our green house gas emissions claimed? Just a thought [ more ]
suricat mufcdiver. That's true, but although I don't think that this is the correct thread for this discussion the subject of "Asylum" does seem appropriate. Let's do this science policy here. I think this is down to differing disciplines not using any language translation tools. Even the math formulae tend to differ between disciplines (that's one reason I usually don't post any math). First show me the bottom. We got lead out of petrol in the UK only to increase its benzene content to more... [ more ]
Ensign Muf [reply from 'Empirical....'] re : comments Folk seem to be so dogmatic in their views that it is hard to imagine any forward movement towards any kind of workable resolution [seems we're stuck between soooo many dogma's that it's hard to see the way forward!?!] Presently I'm favouring a bottom-up resolution, whereby we start at with the broadest set of environmental problems[forget money, just do whats right!!] that we all agree on, solve them and move up!! This way, I think it would be... [ more ]

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing Do you know what annoys me? it's a bit irrational I know, but when they win a point and they do the fist clenched thing, why do they have to change their racquet into their other hand? Why not just clench their other fist? If you could only see one film ..
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Totally impossible to answer for me. I could not choose between all the genres and singling out one film is way too hard. I have never been any good at those favorite, pick your top 10, last film type questions. But, I agree with an earlier post. I would not go there. [ more ]
Belle if you only have one, i think it should cover many emotions, so it has to be funny, sad, enriching, thought provoing, etc. i really like billy elliot. i don't know why but the very last scene where he is the swan... ooh it makes me well up with happiness. there is the pain and comedy too. yes, this would be my film of choice. KAT-KILLER I wouldn't go to such a place. They would have to drag me kicking and screaming! Probably, Dr. Zhivago because it's simply amazing or Fahrenheit 451 which I could memorize and describe to the people living in that bleak, movie-less place. [ more ]

Well-Wisher HG WELLS: Stevenson was right about one thing, violence is contagious, like measles and the real problem with progress is not that things aren't more efficient, the trouble is they're the same things. Enthusiastic Contrafibularities El Loro, I was lucky enough to see a screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc in Sheffield Cathedral back in 2008. Poll: Local/Euro elections - Who will you vote for?
Proggers I wouldn't really bet on anything as far as politics is concerned...I only have a moderate grasp of politics, tbh. All I can say is 'bring on the by-election - or General Election if GB resigns as PM. Gibson standing as an independant is an option but at 70 he could retire I guess. [ more ]
Tourista Well, according to the poll here, NuLab would have smiles all over their faces, instead of the egg that is there now. The Lib Dem vote in many areas has collapsed, and in Devon, the Lib Dem's lost more than half their councillors. Obviously, the conurbations will be radically different, and that will show in the Euro vote, and may just give Broon a boost. [ more ]
Tourista Whats your take on the By-Election?. Will Gibson stand as an independant, and split the NuLab vote?. As it stands, they have a 5,000+ majority to play with. [ more ]

Where do you (mostly) watch movies?
El Loro I watch the majority of films either on television or DVDs. I noticed Well-Wisher's comment on lack of films which can be legally downloaded. There's the 4 on demand site which has an interesting range, but is limited in number. There is also the ability to download films from Lovefilm. At present this is in a beta state and the range of films is very limited - mainly old films. But there are some out of the ordinary such as the latest Peter Greenaway film and Bathory with Anna Friel. At... [ more ]
Mercedes78 I like going to the cinema, we have one in our town, so if there is a film i like in the cinema i'll go, it takes me half an hour on the bus into town, and it's mostly empty in the day when kids are at school, my hubby buys dvd's because we hardly go together. [ more ]
