Does H1N1 virus vaccine increase the risk of cancer?
El Loro The German vaccine is being developed by a German firm called Novartis. There are two types of vaccine in the UK which have been developed by SmithGlaxoKline and Baxters. See BBC article for details. As far as risk is concerned, it's best if you have concerns to talk to your doctor. [ more ]
Ensign Muf The old Mexican swine flu has always struck me as being a bit fishy [ more ]
Former Member Just read his piece. From what he says it refers only to the German vaccine although to be honest we don't know where our lot is being manufactured I doubt there's much to it. I am concerned about being vaccinated (am due to be called up any time now) I don't know which is worse getting the flu or side effects from the vaccine as they might not show up for years to come. Think I might make like an ostrich and put my head in the ground [ more ]

Baby Bunny Aww, thank-you Heatie. I have just added another 2 posts: Beer Scooter and the transcript of a radio conversation in October 1995, between a US Navy ship off the coast of England, and some British authority... Also, cute though that photo is I am neither the injured marine (too cowardly to be involved in any real action) nor the gallant rescuer (too busy saving my own skin in a crisis to assist others ). Baby Bunny These 2 blogs were mentioned in today's Metro: Angry people in local newspapers and Glum Councillors blog What to expect... Angry people in local newspapers British journalism has many fine traditions - fearlessly speaking truth to power, uncovering corruption and incompetence in the highest places, and chasing celebrities down the street while shouting 'show us yer knickers.' No tradition, however, is greater than that of the local newspaper photograph of people looking grumpy while... [ more ]

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
Twee Surgeon hi sub It's great that you have joined the Club. I have read Prey and it's very good. It's not my usual genre but it was great to explore another type of book. I think the deadline for discussing it is next Saturday but I think we will be discussing it in sections. I will re-read it again as we are discussing it so that it is fresh. How are you getting on with Wolf Hall? [ more ]
subatomic partygirl Reference: I am in the Book Club on LiveCloud and our first book, reading as a Group, is Prey by Michael Crichton. Why don't you join us Sub? Funnily enough, I found The Book Club by accident and joined yesterday! Off to buy 'Prey' tomorrow. Like you, it's not a genre I wuld normally read but I'm willing to give it a go. I've never really met a book I didn;t like in *some* way. They're all journeys to be experienced. [ more ]
Twee Surgeon hiya sub Hope you are well. Yes, the description can sometimes set the scene. I'm not sure what you call Hilary Mantel's writing style in Wolf Hall. I think it's called First Person Narrative, where the events are happening as she writes. She transports us back to the Sixteenth Century and we can 'see' the people and the buildings. It's very clever. Yes, A S Byatt was Hilary Mantel's main competition for the Booker. From your quote, I can tell I will like this book but I will order from the... [ more ]

The new Dan Brown book - The Lost Symbol
Twee Surgeon hiya Scooby I don't think Dan Brown writes a lot of books. There was a fair space in between this new one and his last one. I can't see another book from him any time soon. I really enjoyed The Lost Symbol. I do love reading Scooby. I am in the Book Club here on Live Cloud and we are currently reading Prey by Michael Crichton. Why don't you join? We chose the book democratically from a list of about 10-12 books, and the majority choice was Prey. I have actually read it now and we will be... [ more ]
Scooby doo Hi Twee, I'm not reading anything at the moment. I'm not a big book reader but I will read any that are recomended to me and that I can get into straight away. But I will always read a Dan Brown book, when is he writing another . Are you into reading books twee? if so what are you reading now. [ more ]
Twee Surgeon hiya scooby I know, it's a cracker of a book isn't it? I'm glad you enjoyed it and seen the same things I did .. setting it in Washington was a masterstroke imo. I loved the symbolism of the Washington Monument and the Durer engraving/painting interpretation - all in Dan Brown's unique interpretation of course. These things do exist but he gives them all a fresh meaning/slant. I think the inscription on the Washington Monument does exist though .. or am I being sucked into Dan Brown's... [ more ]

El Loro There is no way I could become a monk. My aunt has been a nun for many years, an ordinary hardworking person (her convent was effectively a care home for elderly women), and not like ones portrayed in films. When someone joins an order they start off as a novice rather than as a nun or monk. This is so that they can see whether they are suited and so that the order can see if they are suited. [ more ]
Cariad1 If I text the kids and type in "mum" it comes up "nun. Even technology mocks me. **sigh** No way can I be a nun - just think of the word. Nun. It just says it. And since when has alcohol and quiz nights been off limits? I've seen Father Ted. I know these things. [ more ]

The Tudors
Twee Surgeon Shar, I agree, Henry loved himself just that little bit too much. His self-indulgence knew no bounds but I think he did love AB and JS. He is buried alongside JS, at his own request. He fell out of love with AB because she made him wait, and he also did not like the fact that she did not bow down to his will at the beginning and this loss of power over her at the beginning sealed her fate when he tired of her. I still maintain that he killed AB because she was a living reminder that he once... [ more ]
Shar Reference: I also really believe that he married for love in most of his marriages and he really did want a legitimate son most of all. If you replace 'love' with 'lust' there Twee I would agree ... I don't think he was capable of love myself ... except where it came to himself ... [ more ]
Twee Surgeon Reference: I agree. My concern was not over the historical accuracy, but with the nature of some of the scenes. In particular the one where Catherine is swinging on the swings to show her childish nature, but is naked and then proceeds to stand up and walk over to Henry for presumably another round of sex. If the actress was of the same age as Catherine, I think that this would be not only improper but illegal. The actress is over 18, so there's no issue of legality, but I do question... [ more ]

Dusty When Ralph first noticed that his penis was growing larger and staying erect longer, he was delighted, as was his wife. But after several weeks, his penis had grown to nearly 20 inches. Ralph became quite concerned, so he and his wife went to see a prominent urologist. After an initial examination, the physician explained to the couple that, though rare, Ralph's condition could be cured through corrective surgery. "How long will Ralph be on crutches?" the wife asked anxiously. "Crutches? Why... [ more ]

Triggers 'Vincent' by Don McLean Starry, starry night. Paint your palette blue and grey, Look out on a summer's day, With eyes that know the darkness in my soul. Shadows on the hills, Sketch the trees and the daffodils, Catch the breeze and the winter chills, In colors on the snowy linen land.
