David Bowie dies at the age of 69
Carnelian I read Frankie's column. Frankie Boyle has that rep as a misanthrope but he's not and comes over as a fundamentally decent bloke in his columns. I didn't cry when Bowie died but four days along I'm still quite sad that he's not with us, still listening to his music and thinking if there might ever be an artist of his fantastic vision and talent [ more ]
Carnelian I stuck Bowie on my iPod on random with a load of Bowie albums - albeit, not those belonging the 80s except "Scary Monsters Super Creeps". Most of those songs were great songs. The sheer quality of those songs was overwhelming! [ more ]

Employers now have the right to read employees' private messages at work
Carnelian Fair enough. I've never done social stuff on the firm's time or on the firm's networks/machines. If you don't want to incriminate yourself, do it on your own time and your own hardware. [ more ]
Garage Joe I don't think Mrs Jer would ever be able to access them since she would have to ask me first. [ more ]
Jen-Star Unless it's written into the contact that employees weren't allowed any personal communication's during working hours unless it's for an emergency or they are under a NDA/working with sensitive information this is 100% wrong IMO! [ more ]

Hay Fever?
Aimee I suffer with the same Jen and I keep getting symptoms, I was putting it down to a cold starting but it keeps coming and going, I have started to use my nose spray already [ more ]
Rexi Me too ... I have all-year round hay fever; allergic rhinitus. It gets worse in the summer. It has certainly been bad for the last two weeks. I just hope that all the supermarkets have enough of their own brand pills on the shelves at the time of year. Don't want to be spending a fortune on expensive, branded stuff. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair Was interested to see this thread. Although I've been calling it an "allergy" rather than hay fever, I was suffering from itchy and watering eyes over Christmas, along with occasional sneezing fits - just like I often get in the Spring/Summer... [ more ]

There's Nothing to See Here
Former Member Thanks Eugene I had a vague recollection of seeing it in a documentary, as a celebrated work of art... and an art critic standing in front of it extolling its virtues. So I didn't imagine it ! Nice work if you can get it [ more ]
Eugene's Lair More than that now... It's Kazimir Malevich's "Black Square", first painted in 1915, and one of them (apparently he painted four versions) was auctioned in 2002 for around $1 million! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/..._Malevich#Art_market [ more ]

There is no safe level of drinking
Carnelian BTW, there is no safe level of Tory government either. [ more ]
Carnelian According to the ONS 1.4% of deaths in England and Wales were caused by excessive drinking. [ more ]
Carnelian I'm not sure this tells us much as, for example, if you live in a heavily polluted country the pollution will probably do for you. Many countries ban alcohol and many countries the people are too poor to drink or don't live long enough to get the types of cancers that alcohol creates. Those are often the countries with low life expectancies. Yet those European countries with higher alcohol consumption generally have higher life expectancies. Counties with higher life expectancies are more... [ more ]
