Chris Cornell, 1964-2017
El Loro His widow, Vicky, has written a public letter to him in the US publication Billboard. It reads: To My Sweet Christopher, You were the best father, husband and son-in-law. Your patience, empathy and love always showed through. You had always said I saved you, that you wouldn’t be alive if it were not for me. My heart gleamed to see you happy, living and motivated. Excited for life. Doing everything you could to give back. We had the time of our lives in the last decade and I’m sorry, my sweet... [ more ]

El Loro It looks as if there's been a programme change on BBC1 this evening with an episode of The One Show in place of the advertised programmes which is shown as scheduled for 19.15. Among the items will be Gyles Brandreth talking about the life of Roger Moore. [ more ]
Yogi19 I didn't rate him as James Bond but I liked him in The Saint and The Persuaders. Seems he did a lot of good work for UNICEF. RIP Roger. [ more ]

NHS in England is under cyber attack
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing Today at work we received an e-mail urging us all to be extra vigilant over the heightened terrorist threat and giving some guidelines as to what to be wary off and how to report any suspicions we may have! [ more ]
El Loro A hacking group closely tied to North Korea was behind the massive WannaCry attack earlier this month, security company Symantec says. The way the attack was set up made it "highly likely" that the Lazarus group was responsible, it said. Lazarus has been blamed for a 2014 attack on Sony and the theft of $81m (£62m) from Bangladesh's central bank. In those attacks, the group is believed to have worked on behalf of North Korea's government. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40010996 [ more ]
Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing Today is the first day since the attack that we have been able to print labels. The IT guys are applying various patches, so we have been told not to switch off our computers ALL this week. The layout of the screens keep changing, our icons are waltzing about and occasionaly go AWOL! [ more ]

Manifesto's
Dame_Ann_Average Re: Manifesto's [ more ]
Dame_Ann_Average actually, that was one of the labour party's ideas..or very similar to counter act the rise in immigration. Firms put tenders out abroad to get cheap labour, that's neither the fault of british workers or the foreigners that are brought in to do the work...it's firms trying to get the cheapest labour. We forget that in the seventies and eighties we had to bring skilled labourers from abroad, where was our skilled labourers...doing the Auf Wiedersehen, Pet bit abroad. Of course, they weren't... Saint Industry would not collapse. It's a lie fed to you to justify the 'new slave'. Business would adjust - it has the financial clout and gumption to cope. The new slave is used to drive wages down and productivity up whilst trying to make us feel guilty for being too 'lazy' to take the job ourselves. [ more ]

Masterchef 2017
Baz I've decided that the way the programme is formulated these days is spoiling it ....I preferred it ....and think it was much fairer...when they had sections such as the palate test , and ingredients test....that way contestants had to do more than cook their own ethnic cuisine all the way through . Portmanteau
Roger the Alien Now that's some top class trivia, ta Eugene ! I've seen Fred Hoyle in documentaries, never guessed at that though [ more ]
Eugene's Lair That's right: in cinema, "portmanteau" is basically a fancy way of saying an "anthology film". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthology_film As for culture: here in the UK, the best known examples are probably those made in the 60s by Amicus, the "other" British horror studio after Hammer. Having said that, "Dead of Night" was made much earlier by Ealing. One of it's more bizarre contributions was as the inspiration for Fred Hoyle's Steady State model of the universe - now widely rejected in... [ more ]

Jen-Star Just gonna leave this here This shows the way these two politicians have VOTED on a range of issues over their careers. Not what they've said about it to television cameras, not what newspapers have told you. This is the way they've voted when it's come down to it. [ more ]

Who Do You Think This Is ?
Eugene's Lair Ah; now there's a story... At the time, Noel stated in interviews (e.g. with the NME) that "Wonderwall" was indeed written about Anais' mother, Meg Matthews (who was his girlfriend at the time). However after they divorced he claimed that wasn't true, and the press had made it all up... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...ll_(song)#Background [ more ]

Bank text 'smishing' scam
Jen-Star The thing that got me about this scam is that the messages can appear in the same 'thread' if you like as the previous messages sent by your bank.... I'm suspicious of anything to do with bank accounts and being contacted by anyone in relation to it. I may have thought it was really from the bank though! Would never click and enter my details but i might have contacted the bank concerned rather than brushing it off as a scam. [ more ]
El Loro Saint, I get many phone calls and emails from people trying to scam me but it's been many years since any of them succeeded. When I first signed up for the internet some time in the late 1990s I got an email the following day from the ISP wanting me to confirm my credit card details for the charges. I replied as I hadn't been aware of that sort of scam. But afterwards I wondered and I got in touch with the ISP and they confirmed it was a scam. So I got in touch with the credit card company...
