CroctacusQuite often there are no symptoms....I got collared for a routine blood test when i was at the doctors for something completely unrelated ( a bloody allergy) and the result came back with a sky high glucose level....it seems I have fat bird diabetes (and I'm not overweight). my doctor didn't start me on the medication straight away and I had a couple of months to try and control it with diet and exercise and though it has improved, not enough to avoid the medication.
