The Handmaid's Tale - Series Finale
Kaffs Thanks, Eugene. I will get the book, I think (although I don't seem to have the same time to read as I used to - might finish it before Season 2) Let's just hope that the writers do it justice in the next series now they'll be left to their own devices. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair * Warning - The following contains potential spoilers for both the final episode and the book. * The very end of the TV series is essentially the same as the book, i.e. Offred being driven away by the "Secret Police". Offred's last speech as she steps into the van is lifted directly from the book. One slight difference in the book is that as well as telling Offred to trust him, Nick also tells her that the men are with "Mayday", i.e. the resistance. However Nick's intentions and affiliations... [ more ]

BBC2 The Sweet Makers
Baz It was a great series EC....I throughly enjoyed it [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I'm just watching the repeat. I have to say this is a great programme, except for the bit where they are poisoning people with arsenic laced sweets !!! I wonder if they will mention Thorntons started here in Sheffield. Although they are more famous for chocolate, they do a wide range of toffee products. WOW - that egg, fish and other molds. [ more ]

CH 5's penultimate Big Brother under current Endomol contract.
Eugene's Lair I haven't seen the last two "regular" series now, and I reckon it would take most of these "tweaks" to make me watch again. The thing is, I suspect BB have had a nasty shock from the recent success of "Love Island", and they're probably going to continue a competitive "race to the bottom". If anything, it's even less likely now that we'll ever see BB return to anything remotely like the show we once enjoyed. [ more ]

Mission: Impossible star Martin Landau dies aged 89 ...and also Living Dead director.
Eugene's Lair I certainly can't argue that Romero's oeuvre can be a difficult watch for many ("intense" and "realistic" are descriptions you hear a lot), but he is unquestionably an important figure in horror cinema. I think I would summarize his contribution as: 1) He essentially created the modern zombie movie (although I believe he never actually used that term himself); 2) He pioneered a documentary-style approach to horror; 3) He also helped develop the horror movie as social-political satire (his... Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Yes Eugene, I must say that for me too it was MI: repeats as I would have been in nappies in 1969. Space 1999 was definitely my real first programme I saw him in. I don't think I have ever seen Ed Wood. Can't recall anyway. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair Been meaning to comment on this thread for a while.... Martin Landau: I just about remember him in "Mission: Impossible", but I was too young to see him in it first time round and so only really saw him in repeats. He left the show in 1969 and was replaced by Leonard Nimoy (just off of "Star Trek"), who I remember better. For me, however, Landau was "Space 1999" - loved that show! Film-wise, I remember him best as the bad guy in "North by Northwest", and as a memorable Bela Lugosi in "Ed... [ more ]

Enthusiastic Contrafibularities @Carnelian I had an inkling you would get it. Spoilers: New Doctor Who!
Carnelian Much the same, although she grew on me. That series opener with those little bits of fat (the Adipose) was utterly dire but over the series she improved considerably. I also thought Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald character was quite annoying at first only for her character to blossom when working with Peter Capaldi. [ more ]

Carnelian yes, there's bucket loads of theories on the universe and its origins. Pitch Battle
Eugene's Lair I saw the adverts for this, and although I've always had a bit of a soft spot for a cappella, I'm not a big fan of TV talent shows, so I haven't bothered. I have to say though that the show's "food chain" is unusually weird even by TV standards: it's a singing competition inspired by a film ("Pitch Perfect"), which was adapted from a non-fiction book ("Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate a Cappella Glory") about a real life singing competition (the International Championship of...
