IPhone and iPad users - the next Apple update iOS11 will make some older apps no longer work
Baz I particularly like the improved keyboard and the bit that sends out a standard message saying you are driving and can’t reply to the phone . [ more ]
Baz I agree Eugene ...although while my iPads are fairly new , my iPhone is only an SE so doesn’t get some of the whizzy bits But on the whole I think it’s a very good update [ more ]

For anyone who uses CCleaner software
Carnelian I've used it in the past, can't say I've noticed any appreciable performance advantages from using it. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair ❤️
Eugene's Lair Thanks for posting this, El Loro. Annoyingly, I was scanning through The Register during my lunch break, but they only posted about this after I signed off. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2..._ccleaner_downloads/ It looks like I've had a lucky escape. I've used CCleaner for years and even recommended it here, but I've only ever used the free version and never signed up for automatic updates. My current version is rather out of date, and I've been meaning to update since I came back from... [ more ]

X factor
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I would keep the status quo Baz. I have watched it and it is dire. ground hog day every year. When I see clips of catch bits I find it so dated and tired now. Clearly SC keeps it going because he can make a mint from the poor unfortunates and also ITV make pots from the advertising. [ more ]
Baz Hi PCCE It's one of the few reality shows I never got into ...mostly cos it used to clash with Strictly I think [ more ]

711 million email addresses scooped up by giant spambot
Eugene's Lair Thanks for posting this thread, El Loro. As some of you will know, I've been on holiday and without internet access, so there's little I could do about this until now. A colleague informed me about haveibeenpwnd a while back and I was "clean" then, but it looks like this latest hack has finally caught me - so: new password time... My lesser-used address is still clean, but I see my work email has finally been pwnd too - not that I'll be the only one there. Quite a few colleagues were caught... [ more ]

CBB 2017
Baz I think that unless they go back to basics the programme has had its day Rawky [ more ]
Rawky-Roo Channel 5 has the rights to BB until the end of 2018. Expect next year to be the last on Channel 5... and perhaps the whole show. Not sure which channel would want to pick it up. [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I'm not so sure, just like the 'civvie' version, the numbers don't look good. Slow, lingering death. It's all about advertising and if the viewing figures go down, so does the advertising revenue. August 26th. Celebrity Big Brother 2017 ends with least watched final to date The live show averaged 1.6 million between 9PM and 10:45PM live on Channel 5, peaking with an audience of 1.9 million as the winner was revealed. A bumper edition of Bit On The Side straight after averaged 600,000... [ more ]

Is it true?
Yogi19 I wouldn't mind if Chad won, at least he has made me laugh a few times. Sarah is still the bookies fav to win but gormless Amelia is now third fav. It will be a travesty if Amelia wins! [ more ]
Baz Takes some believing , eh Vids But I think it's going to be Sara....who I detest !! Still , it's the worst final line up ever ....there's not one of them left that I would like to win !! [ more ]

Another death..........
El Loro Brian Aldiss, the science fiction writer, has died at the age of 92. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41003085 The BBC article mentions some of his fiction books and stories but not his non-fiction book - "The Billion Year Spree, the History of Science Fiction" published in 1973. This was revised and expanded by him in 1985 as "The Trillion Year Spree". They were fascinating but of course now over 30 years out of date. [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities Yes Saint, I recall some footage and interviews. Difficult would be the word. But you can't take away his ability to make people laugh. 91 is a good innings. [ more ]

Bannon: Did he jump, or was he pushed?
Moonie It depends upon if you believe in 'fake news' or not [ more ]
Baz I think he was pushed before he jumped , before he was pushed [ more ]
El Loro Looks as if Bannon had said he would resign on the 14th, but that was postponed because of Charlottsville, then he got fired but says he was leaving anyway. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40985180 http://www.weeklystandard.com/....WZdoRD_V9cY.twitter [ more ]

Eden : Paradise Lost
Supervox 'Valley Boys'?? Lol!! They're worse than the bitchiest group of Valley Girls I ever came across when I lived Stateside!! I guess it makes for good tv though, because I'd happily beat the crap out of any of them right now!! I bet that Jack's regiment is really proud of him!! Great way to show what the officer class of the British Army is made of - fcuking lightweight cnut!! Glenn 'The Deerhunter' - OMG - could he be any more slimy if he tried? Titch is just an oxygen thief - plain and simple. [ more ]

The Handmaid's Tale - Series Finale
Kaffs Thanks, Eugene. I will get the book, I think (although I don't seem to have the same time to read as I used to - might finish it before Season 2) Let's just hope that the writers do it justice in the next series now they'll be left to their own devices. [ more ]
Eugene's Lair * Warning - The following contains potential spoilers for both the final episode and the book. * The very end of the TV series is essentially the same as the book, i.e. Offred being driven away by the "Secret Police". Offred's last speech as she steps into the van is lifted directly from the book. One slight difference in the book is that as well as telling Offred to trust him, Nick also tells her that the men are with "Mayday", i.e. the resistance. However Nick's intentions and affiliations... [ more ]

BBC2 The Sweet Makers
Baz It was a great series EC....I throughly enjoyed it [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I'm just watching the repeat. I have to say this is a great programme, except for the bit where they are poisoning people with arsenic laced sweets !!! I wonder if they will mention Thorntons started here in Sheffield. Although they are more famous for chocolate, they do a wide range of toffee products. WOW - that egg, fish and other molds. [ more ]
