velvet donkey Saw a piece with Ian Holm, Ian Richardson and David Warner photo'd outside the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford 1953 I think. They were pals. Funny how they went on to transverse each other in their careers. RIP. The Bofors Gun. Classic drama before David Mamet arrived. Beats Alien. And RIP Willie. [ more ]

Baz I like it Lori ....you will have to let us know if it works [ more ]
Lori My daughter texted me the other day, asking if I had any strawberry-sized rocks in my garden. I do, so she sent her kids up to "harvest" some. She read an article about how you can paint rocks to look like strawberries, and then put them in your strawberry beds. The birds will peck at them, and will soon be discouraged because they are rocks, of course, and they will soon leave your strawberry beds alone. Seems like a fun quarantine experiment! [ more ]

Hmmm.......
Kaytee I was against schools going back, but yesterday there were huge gangs of teenagers flouting the lockdown and meeting up in the park..as well as large families of four adults at least and lots of kids picnicking. Maybe the teenagers should be corralled in school, not outdoors meeting each other then going their separate ways [ more ]

Enthusiastic Contrafibularities In life, there are always exceptions to the rule. [ more ]
Saint Whilst i was training to be a teacher one of my lecturers used to extol the virtues of education saying it would make a person more informed and thus a better, more reasonable person. This proves otherwise [ more ]

COVID question
Eugene's Lair Disturbing but hardly a surprise, as it's not a new tactic by any means. China's been using such strong-arm tactics for "soft-power" purposes for years. Consider their targeting of companies dealing with Taiwan, or their recent dealings with Hollywood re the nine-dash line (cf. "Abominable")... [ more ]

Happy Anniversary, Gaga!
Baz No thanks needed Mollie ....but thank you for having me [ more ]
*mollie* Happy 11th Anniversary to this wonderful forum and to all who keep it going. I know this place daily enriches my life and is even more important during these difficult times. I too sadly miss mine and Hicky's special friend Emptybox after all those years we posted here with him. Such a nice idea to set up the Memorium. A big thank you to the lovely Baz who came to keep us company in HIcky's thread when Hicky and I were so lonely without Emptybox. You're a star Baz. [ more ]

The BBC's Big Night In
Carnelian I watched Davina McCall tell Sam Smith his song was about the best music in the history of music then a few minutes later she was telling a woman with dyed red hair that her hair was practically the most beautiful hair in the history of hair. She really does love her superlatives. Back to the 80s with Dawn French and her toe-curlingly unfunny shtick. That was about as much as I could bear [ more ]

Carnelian Oh, is that Sam Smith? He's a top-selling artist. I know that much. He X-Factored that song up to the max. I'm listening to it on YouTube and it's like fingernails down a blackboard while strangling a cat to me. Loads of people like it, I just don't get it at all. [ more ]

Job Retention Scheme
Carnelian My firm is taking the piss, in its good times when it expanded its workforce from around 30 in 2011 to 150 in 2020, yet still froze salaries, for 8 years basically screwing over the workers who'd worked hard to aid that success. Now it's pleading poverty and wants to lower salaries by 10%. [ more ]
El Loro Chancellor didn't mention this. Looks as if the HMRC email was only sent to tax agents such as myself and that the public announcement "will be made shortly" [ more ]

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing Profits to the NHS is all very well, but who decides the profits? [ more ]
Eugene's Lair Yeah; I know what you mean, Velvet. My initial reaction was "Oh dear, no.", and with some practical experience of "pseudo-randomness" from way back I have fundamental problems with the notion of gambling on what is ultimately just a computer algorithm. That said; my understanding is that the virtual race wasn't originally intended for betting on, and was only meant to provide the TV pundits with a light-hearted talking-point before the real thing. There's definitely an argument that the... [ more ]

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing I used to be lost without my watch, but after several years of NOT wearing a watch at work (NHS policy) and not being able to (skin was annoyed by the engraving on the back) I hardly notice that I'm not wearing it. Still carried it around though - just in case! [ more ]
