True...but then aren't all names a bit selfish?  Its the name the parents want, with the child not having a choice till its old enough to change it by deed poll.

I hate football so no....I do however love cooking, so my eldest daughter is called, Fanny Beaton Delia .........and we love her 

Well yeah, but it's a bit different being named after a family member or both spouses agreeing on a name than some bloke seemngly taking charge and controlling everything by giving a child some supid name that isn't even a proper name. Anyway, you kind of have to give them a name or you would just be frowning and gesticulating wildly at them for 18 yrs.

I like interesting names, but ones that have an air of 'je ne sais quoi' about them. If i ever have a Son I would like to call him: Ethan or Harrison, and Lily for a girl.

Ethan sounds nice, but I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to naming my children..

My ex tried to get me to agree to calling our son Rio  <-----  was my reaction!

When i had my little girl there was a woman in the same ward who had just given birth to a little boy ...i thought i was hearing things when she told the nurse she needed a nappy for Apollo....i asked the nurse if  heard right and she sad yes and just wait till visiting time...she winked. Later that night her husband arrived with with three toddlers ,Aphrodite, Hera and Zeus..... i had a dog called Zeus at the time

My son has the name of a famous golfer - we happened to have the same surname and both loved the Forename - Mr woo is a bit gutted he never followed in the golfers footsteps!

We joked when dil was expecting my first grandling that he would be called Arsene Cesc Thierry but he ended up as Sebastian.

I do have mates who have football named kids. One family has a Charlie Nicholas (known as Nicky) and one of their girls has Lanesra (Arsenal backwards) as a middle name.

Another Gooner I know has a boy called Gillespie after Gillespie Road and the many times he walked down it to Highbury.

And there are a few Thierrys among Gooner kids too.

There is a lad at my kids school called Britain poor boy, there are other terrible ones i've heard and asked the kids to repeat it but thats the worst, do you think his parents were doing a beckham?

I take your point and agree with you, but it could be that Robson was named after Robson Green, and Ferdinand after Ferdinand Magellan the explorer.(Robson Green was born in Northumberland and it's traditional there for the first son to be named after a family surname),

its not such a bad thing, depends on what the name is. My mum was watching wimbledon, around the time i was born in 82  and im named after the tennis player Hana Mandlikova. I can handle that

My mates husband wanted to call their son Geronimo..... she wouldn't have it.

No I would not, I would choose very tasteful names.

I am expecting (not literally) to get pregnant with triplets when I think I am really having my menopause.  (It's been a standing joke between Mr Cinds & I after never conceiving).  But we have named them already.

The Triplets will be called 'Lambrini-Leigh, Peroni-Lee and Baileys-on-Ice-Lee.

I think that is lovely

They will be the kids that cause the most chaos everywhere they go.  I will be proud of them.

It doesn't mean because a child happens to have the same name as someone famous, that it was called after that person or their parents be chavs 

 My grandson is named Rio James, his mother doesn't support any football team and her husband supports Newcastle and hates Manchester United. My grandson was actually named after my daughter and husbands best friend who was killed in Cyprus at the age of 24 serving in the forces...so I actually love the name and the reason why they called him that!

My middle son is named Jaime after a portugese friend of my husbands he served with in the forces. People never spell it right but he's proud of it and loves his name.

I'm proud of my grandsons name Bethni and the sentiment behind it 

My son has an unusual name, (not a footballers name)...he's called Umbro-Mitre.
