This decade has been the worst musically, hasnt it? So many shit acts and crappy songs getting to number 1 just because of their looks or because they went on the xfactor.
60s - Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan
70s - Led Zeppelin, Pink floyd, Queen
80's - U2, MJ, Guns n Roses, George Micheal
90s - Oasis, Radiohead, Blur, Coldplay
00s - Er...No-one
All because of shows like the xfactor that promote bad artists like the twins and allow them or similar artists to enter the charts.
Get rid of the show.

I think this decade is pretty bad.
50s, 60s, 70s for me. Downhill from there.

I like so many different songs from old to new, i can't dis a decade. The Twins can't sing very well but I enjoy their performance and fun. I am proud to be T.W.A.T number 10.
Every decaded has rubbish artists with or without XFactor.
I agree.
I saw a programme on MTV yesterday, which was playing every number one from the last 10 years on this particular week. (So there were ten in total that were all number during the first week of November - in 2000, 2001, 2002 and so on, right up to the current number one.) And the best one was 'Hollar' by the spice girls, which was 2000! When one of the Spice Girls 'not-so-brilliant' number ones is the best one of the lot, then you KNOW there must have been some shite around. LOL.
I was looking at the best selling albums of the decade the other day, and it was full of James Morrison, Coldplay, Norah Jones, Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum and similar acts. Music to slit your wrists by, by totally over-rated artists IMO. Who the hell has been buying these albums just baffles me, because I don't know anyone who likes ANY of them.
I can count on the fingers of one hand, the amount of artists and bands that have emerged this past decade, that I think are really good. None of the above mentioned feature in there obviously.
And who the HELL is buying Cheryl Cole's album?! And WHY is she being hailed as some kind of awesome National Treasure? It was a severe battle for her to perform that song 'live' the other week on X Factor; you could see the relief on her face when she had finished! There's no WAY she could do a 90 minute set over and over again for a 50 date tour or whatever, like some acts do. She is just crap. And she is classed as one of our 'pop princesses'. Jeeeez!
Also, I think Adele and Duffy and several other female 'singers' who have been rammed down our throats as amazingly talented artists are over-rated too.
Finally, I agree that some of the stuff that the reality tv 'talent' shows churn out, is asysmal, and the X Factor song that is ALWAYS released so it can conveniently get to the Christmas number one, should be banned from being released til the last few days of December, because it's effing BORING now! Simon Cowell and his minions always make sure they pull out all the stops to get the shit to number one.
'When you believe' by Leon Jackson made me want to vomit every time I heard it.
He is singularly the worst EVER talent show winner IMO!
There was a time when you were full of excitement and anticipation at what may be number one for Christmas, and it would often be a CHRISTMAS song! NOW it's always the X factor piece of shit that they put together. PLUS, singles only have to sell about 500 to get to bloody number one anyway!!!
REALLY hoping Jedward win, to show what a piece of shit this show really is! When you see the standard and quality of the American Idol acts at this point in the contest, it makes you cringe! X Factor is like a year 7 school concert compared to American Idol!

I really like whats been dubbed 'The new Britpop',artists like Tinchy Stryder and N-Dubz.Even if you don't like Urban music(or whatever sub genre),both those albums are very good. And thats from an old woman
Eeeeek, sorry Mazzystar; I just loathe tinchy strider, Ndubz, dizzee rascal, and other acts like that ... (Also loathe chipmonk, Kanye West, 50 cent and the like.) But hey, each to their own. That sort of music makes me switch the radio OFF though!
The charts this decade have been chock a block with that sort of stuff. I used to like R and B too; pre 2000s; now most of it is just noise to me, because it's crap now (JMHO of course.) And I think Rihanna has one of the worst singing voices ever. It's just a drone, and again, she makes me reach for the off button.

Wow Frosty...well said
I can remember the tail end of the 50's and the first few years of the 60's. It doesn't get any worse than that believe me! At least now we have a huge choice of diverse sources to listen to.
Some unknown mechanism operates whereby all the X Factor type crap will be swept away by another genre.

If we're talking what's in the charts then this decade is easily the worst, but there's plenty of good stuff out there that flies under the radar of the people who are buying what Radio 1 tells them too...
This decade has been bad, but for me it has to be the 1970s Motown stuff , I only started getting interested in chart music again with the advent of Bon Jovi
I love current stuff, and I've liked every decade from the 60s on. Can't stand 50s music - all that Rock around the clock stuff.
1820's. That Schubert was totally over-rated.

Damn you and your quickness! I was going to say that!
Well for me there are a few artist from this decade who are quite good how about:-
The Killers
The Script
Razorlight
The Feeling
Michael Buble
James Morrison
Arctic Monkeys
Fall out Boy
Scouting for Girls
Take That (2nd time round)
Not all everyones cup of tea but still good imho of course!

Somewhere between the 90s and this one. There are a few good ones, but they're vastly outnumbered by crap.
It depends on what sort of music consumer you are. If you just listen to the charts/radio and go by airplay and wait for summat to tickle your fancy then yeah...it is pretty crap now.
But if you are a follower of certain artists and keep up with what they are doing, even though they no longer get any media attention then there have been some bloody corkers in recent years. Ditto new artists that you are never gonna see get covered on the x factor but can find if you look in the right places.

well ... I hope it's not the 70's .... I'm about to go on a 70's weekend with the girls
The Killers, Snow Patrol,Kings of Leon,Greenday, Muse, Flourence & the Machine,Elbow loads of great bands/acts out there.
My favourite band at the moment Los Campesinos! Brilliant live.Released more tour dates for Jan/Feb to promote their third album.Beamers mentioned some great artists there and I'd add Doves to that.Their last album is great.(Kingdom of Rust)
i pretty much agree with frosty
i may be getting old, but when this decade start i was 18...and thought chart music was shite then...even more so now lol.
i like the odd song but there isn't a number 1 i remember liking for YEARS.

I'd have to agree with you Frosty
there's the odd band that I like but that's because they play the genre of music I like during the 70s/80s and early 90s I eagerly listened to the radio and chart shows - can't remember the last time I've done so

Dont agree. Some of my favourite acts have been around this decade Dizzee Rascal, The Streets, Estelle, Alicia Keyes, John Legend, Black Eyed Peas, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Jazmine Sullivan, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Angie Stone i could go on and on.....
Thanks folks. Seem the majority agree it hasn't been an amazing decade for music - and it's the worst ever IMO., As duchess said, there have been SOME good acts, and some she mentioned are ones I like. But as someone else said earlier, the good stuff has been outweighed by crap. R and B has taken a turn from the worse IMO.
The 590's were rough if you didn't like Gregorian Chant.
The 610's brought us the first Gregorain Chant in DUB, a godsend for some in Llandudno.

Oh, I love a good Gregorian chant.
Probably the 80's. All those "New Romantic" groups like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet were a big turn off.

you can't knock the 80's!! For me, I'd have to say late 90's and most of this decade have been terrible.
With a few exceptions of course.
Surely it is all a matter of taste?
I mean personally why is Bob Dylan considered a legend, a drug addled idiot whose music is and songs were particularly meaningless to me, and who could and can NOT sing for toffee, an incomprehensible mumbling mess if you ask me.
The trouble is one cannot be objective when it comes to such things, as music is something that is entirely subjective.....
In the current decade as people have mentioned, we have had some good acts, some who will not last, but others who will stand the test of time.
I do agree about the cole woman tho, a talentless thug who should not be given the time let alone heroworshipped.

I agree in the main. But then I hear (for example) Stevie Wonder & Clapton among others putting their spin on Dylan's work and I like it.
It's HIM. He's at fault. He writes a good song but can't sing it.
I agree about Bob Dylan. Good songwriter, crap singer.
the 1850s was pretty shit.
this decade started off really well - the strokes, the libertines, white stripes, yeah yeah yeahs, killers etc etc, but has died on its arse a bit in the last couple of years.
until john and edward came along anyway.

I was going to say this decade was saved (for me) by the inclusion of Marilyn Manson...but he straddles late 90s / early noughties.
bono is a cunt.
80's - U2

Since we seem to be veering towards insults......
Marilyn Manson=naught but a pantomime dame.
I think you guys are just saying it because you are older than teenagers, the teens are having a blast. Anyhoo I kind of agree everything on the radio is autotuned beyond recognistion. However, I think each decade had trash music.
Also everything is about looks these days so the not so attractive talents dont get any shine compared to the attractive non-talents.

Who's veering towards insults? And.... Pantomime dame??? (Word of advice.....never take your young un's to anything he's appearing as Widow Twanky in).
I like his music. He's done some of the best covers ever. 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Tainted Love' top the originals (IMO) by a country mile. His concept and videos are, to me, fabulously freaky.....art.
As with pretty much everything, each to their own, eh Crossy?

I have to respectfully disagree there, subby. Nothing will ever be as downright sleazy-fabulous as Soft Cell's Tainted Love I'm not a fan of MM's music, but I am a fan of him as a person. An intelligent, interesting person in an industry of vacuousity

Good for you! Alas! I've seen 'em all. The so called freaks come and go and I still prefer Beefheart and Zappa.

My feelings too (except that I love his music). I like the Soft Cell version but there's something about Marc Almond that makes me slightly barfy. Sleazadelic, he is for sure. Add Reply
