This is slightly o/t but something that is making me furious lately is TV presenters and Newsreaders who can't pronounce sixth properly.

same as when the olympics were on...    most of them said Bejing wrong...  they softened the j

They should have a style guide like newspapers do, not to soften out regional accents, coz I like them...but place names, people, they should pronounce those properly.

This "sikth" thing is driving me crazy...it's number six not number sik!

Apparently after a week, they still couldn't say Rothbury properly

They still can't say Cockermouth properly either!  Or Redcar...

Most of them get Newcastle right now though

I'm guilty of using street slang a lot in my day to day But then I grew up with bods wot use it innit.

When I first joined a chatroom it took me ages to work out what the acronyms stood for.  For a long time I thought LOL must be 'Lord oh Lord' - it actually fits quite well in most contexts

I thought it meant lots of love..

I use loads of regional slang (you may have noticed, like though but pet) Nowt wrong with that!

Someone told a story on here, some mate of theirs from another forum or chatroom had a death in the family, they thought LOL meant lots of love too...and ended their "So sorry for your loss" message with LOL

Absolutely...we get it all the time here in Wales. It frankly gets on my tits they go to such lengths to pronounce some arse end of nowhere country and can't even manage Pontypridd. For those who don't know it's Ponty-pree-th with the emphasis on the pree-th rather than the Ponty. 

BUT my all time, never to be beaten hate when it comes to words being used out of context remains the use of the word "of" instead of "have" - could of, should of, would of... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

I love to hear Llanelli pronounced properly, I like to attempt it (think I have it half right) it makes a dead satisfying sound

omg!   there is no way I can pronounce most of the places in Wales! 

But I love listening to Welsh being spoken...   I kinda listen in awe..

There's no way you can even describe how the "ll" sound. It has to be heard! Huw Edwards will always have it right though bless him. I grew up near Llanelli and went to Llanelli Girls' Grammar School (as it was then called) so I've perfect diction of course...

I used to work with a Welsh girl called Karen but we called her Murfa cos she came from Merthyr Tydvil.

It does annoy me when people say glassgo is glazgo

Not necessarily because that would mean them putting on a bit of a NE accent, but they pronounce it as two separate words. Red.....massive pause.....car.  Drives me scatty!

Can I answer this too? I think they should. If they are reporting from or about a place then it's only respectful to pronounce it as it should be pronounced.

Redkeh or Redkah...even if newsreaders didn't get it quite right I think they should at least to attempt to say Redcar as all one word.  They all say Newcassle now instead of Newcarsul

Up to a point Karma - it is annoying when broadcasters get something totally wrong, but the British do have a habit of using their own pronunciation of places - Paris springs to mind, and what about the way we actually call places something totally different from the locals - Cologne instead of Koln, Basle instead of Basel, Germany instead of Deutchland

I come from quite near to Newcastle, and I pronounce it Newcarsul - I always have done it's just the way I speak, I would sound totally false if I said Newcassle.

I shall write to the beeb and tell them to they have to pronounce Southwark as South....massive pause...Walk then.  Couldn't see them going for it.

I don't see why the rest of the country shouldn't get afforded the same respect as London meself.
