Haven't we spoke about this in another thread on C4 Fluff? Did we not decide that at least two of them could be used either way

Burn is the present tense burned is past tense. As onetoo says burnt has benn given the official go-ahead. However I am of the opinion that is because of laziness (on the part of the Powers that Be) and to me it still seems incorrect.quote:Originally posted by Supercalifragilistic:quote:Originally posted by onetoo:quote:Originally posted by Supercalifragilistic:quote:Originally posted by Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing:

Think I say burnt
I burnt my fingers or, I burned my fingers
I thought burned was present tense and burnt past tense..but I'm probably wrong!

The ed or t endings are both correct on the irregular verbs you have mentioned. I`m sure I posted this earlier.

Number 17 is great. Can I make a suggestion for the name of the Club?
How about Number X of 'The Misuse of 'of' Club'
or
Number X of the Misuse of 'of' Society

Both sound good to me, but onetoo had already put something else in their sig...over to you onetoo for the final decision!

Yes I like either one of those It's whether to use club or society. Society slightly gets the upper hand in my opinion, but I'll go with the flow
I like that, and I'd think it wold HAVE to be a Society.quote:Originally posted by Twee Surgeon:

And there's another example. It's defINITEly not definately, or any other strangulation of the word.

fluffy, for years I have spelt (or is it spelled lol) definitely definately. It was only about five years ago I caught on to it and I think of all those documents with my mistakes on them

PMSL! Sorry
On a related theme, the spelling of minuscule gets me. I was quite happy for years and years spelling it miniscule and then I found out that was wrong. And when I told my daughter (who is also pretty hot on spelling) she totally refused to believe me.
Hehe! I just waited until all the humming and hawing was over.quote:Originally posted by Queen of the High Teas:quote:Originally posted by onetoo:

Also me ma in law used to visit a market in Hackey, it was on Wrigley Road but always called it Ridley Road.
Think you mean the other way round Queen! It's definitely Ridley Road, I used to live just round the corner - but I've heard people say Wrigley Road.
See how the woman has me confused as well!

Think sometimes we only know things are an sp when someone points it out and then realise we've been doing it for years without knowing Someone at my work, (a senior staff member!) always writes as instead of has in her emails, I think she'd die if she knew, so somehow can't bring myself to tell her. My older sis says 'of' instead of 'have,' but don't think she'd thank me for pointing it out!

Bloomin eck! Some strong feelings in here but as Super says....if it gets just one person to change the 'of' thing, then it will have been worth it. I can live with the rest.
I know people who say Burminam rather than Birmingham.
I knew another that came from there and pronounced it BirMINGam in a her broad brummie accent.
People from Birmingham are mental.

The very worst spelling mistake I ever seen was on an official legal document. Someone had made a Witness Statement and it went something like this
'I noticed the man had very big mussels'
'I noticed the man had very big mussels'

I was going to suggest the 'Pedantry Conglomerate' but DH always I use 300 words when 3 will do!
And, Shaks and LL - Americans make my blood boil (sorry mods) - DERR-by instead of DAR-by. We named it first you lot! Mind, my grandma says it like that - I wonder if there's something that I don't know about going on?

Where I come from we say Birming-gum. For years I thought that it had -gum at the end!

And then they call it a 'zee' instead of a 'zed' and then Stuart in BB last year did that too
