Windows 10 is scheduled to be released on July 29th.
The windows icon which has started appearing on screens for computers using Windows 7 or 8 is intended to be used for reserving your copy of Windows 10 and then download it from July 29th.
There's no cost if you do that within an unspecified period of time of launch. If you don't upgrade within that perios, then it won't be free. But Microsoft don't seem to have stated how long the period will be. It may be a year or much shorter.

BUT
will there be problems which will surface after Windows 10 is launched?
will there be compatability problems for existing programs?
AND
Microsoft have indicated that there won't be any Windows 11, 12 etc. Windows 10 will be the last numbered Windows product. The idea is that Windows 10 will cease to be numbered, rather than new releases there will be updates and upgrades released over the internet much as we get system updates.
BUT will we have to pay a regular subscription to get those. Microsoft say these updates will be free for the supported lifetime of your device. We'll see.
Thank you for that El Loro, i was iffy about clicking through as you say, there are always bugs in Windows upon launch.... I'm not going to be a guinea pig

That's how I feel as well. Also my computer is one of those with a C ssd drive and a D hdd drive. The C drive is very fast but nowhere near the capacity of the D drive. The C drive is when Windows is stored and I don't know if it would cope with installing Windows 10. The system requirements for hard drive space are the same for Windows 7 and Windows 10. If the upgrading tried to download everything for Windows 10 on to the C drive before removing Windows 7, I don't think there's sufficient spare capacity to do that.
That's something I would want answered before I even thought about going for Windows 10.
It looks like it will be free for a year from July this year
I think it has to be better than Windows 9.
I know someone who beta tested it, he reckons it's a zillion times better than 8/8.1 and is similar to 7 but with apps. he works for Curry's and said it will be worth downloading once any bugs are ironed out, although he had no problems with it
I'm not sure i wanna mess with my system tbh, I'm happy with Win7.. If it aint broke i aint gonna fix it
It has been said on tech sites that your open app (usually in the taskbar) will be hidden - not sure why they would need to, but it begs the question, how do you know what you have open?

Jen, with Windows 7 there is an icon at the bottom of the screen on the right hand side, you can reserve your copy and you have 12 months in which to download it or not

It was that appearing that made me make this thread Dame, it says it will d/l automatically when its available.
I have d/l the windows advice to see about upgrading my vista business os, to windows 7, but so many conflicting reports on what to do, that I have done nothing.
Which is fine as I like Vista, but it means some hardware is incompatible .
I hate apps btw.
Which is why I rarely use my tablet for anything else but reading books.
