We’ve only been to Dom Rep and I found the poverty upsetting and (although we didn’t see any) there is an implied threat of crime.

We went out during the day but we got hassled with people wanting us to buy tat. TBF, they weren’t threatening, just very persistent and it became annoying.
We didn’t go out of the hotel complex at night and found it off putting that the hotel security all carried guns.
