he had one long rod Baz and it started protruding at his knee, they removed i right away...it had been in years  I'm sure yours will be fine and things have improved so much since 1989

I had mine put in in 1965.....but it started playing up in the early 80s so they tried to take the plate out , but it had grown into the bone , so they just sheered the screw heads off and left plate in ....I’ve had no problems since
