Last sighting of Loch Arkaig Ospreys....on the nest:-

Eldest chick (JJ6) - 15th August

Mum - 22nd August

Youngest chick (JJ7) - 23rd August

Dad - 5th September

Middle chick (JJ8) - Morning of 6th September

It is too soon to conclude that JJ8 and dad have migrated. We need a few more days of NOT sighting them here, or confirmed sightings of them elsewhere, before we can be reasonably sure.

It's expected that Louis and Aila will nest here again next year as this is their 4th year pairing and nesting on this same nest.

2017 -  3 eggs - 1 successful chick - male - Lachlan

2018 - 3 eggs - stolen by pine marten.

2019 - 3 eggs - 2 successful chicks - both female - Ranoch and Mallie.

2020 - 3 eggs - 3 successful chicks - 2 males - JJ6 (Doddie) and JJ7 (Captain) - 1 female - JJ8 (Vera)

The sexing of ospreys is notoriously difficult and is initially a 'best guess'. The DEFINITE sex can only be known if and when they are seen mating and breeding......and it could be 2 or 3 years before they are ready for that.

So this year's brood are not likely to be seen having chicks of there own until 2022 at the earliest.

At least they are breeding, which is wonderful 😁
