I think they had done every test they could think of and couldn’t find a cause so couldn’t find the right treatment, and he was obviously suffering.

perhaps tried antibiotics

I think they had tried that 

 awwwww   they could have tried a different one - but it was suffering

From what the pathologist said, I think it was too far advanced for any antibiotics to turn things around 

 so sad
