The UK will soon have a budget deficit of 15pc of GDP. The Government will be selling gilts equivalent to 20pc of our national income for at least three successive years. To say this is the worst fiscal crisis in this country's peace-time history is an understatement. We're now in banana republic territory.
The UK will soon lose its Triple-A credit rating. Big institutions will then be forced to dump UK gilts – leading to a disastrous spike in yields. Interest rates right across the economy will balloon, whatever the Bank of England does.
For international debt markets, the name of the game is supply – how many gilts will be issued, and when. The Government will have to pay much more for credit, leading to even deeper spending cuts.
Fears are growing that "quantitative easing" – printing money – will soon push inflation up. When that happens, gilts will look much less attractive. As sterling keeps falling, that's also weakening the demand for UK government debt.
David Davis, the former Tory leadership candidate, wrote a newspaper article calling for "the debate to start on how to cut public spending". He mentioned some "unmentionables" – including Trident, public sector pensions and the renegotiation of PFI contracts.
http://www.qsl-tenders.co.uk/about.php
In the certain absence of international investors to buy the massive quantities of proposed UK government gilts there is realistically only one option for the UK. A fundamental, root and branch reassessment of all government spending.
The formula a future government must adopt is well known and well practised by the IMF. Quite simply, the run away government spending of recent years must be brought back into balance.

now i'm sorry but i realy do resent that, i always paid well, had very loyal (and union free) staff, you see if your staff are happy and not worried about stuff they will work hard and they will stay with you so you can afford to take risks paying for extra training for any that want it, the result of that is you will outperform some sweatshop boss who is spending half his time trying to replace staff, fill vacancies and never has the time to motivate his staff or train them up properly, keep at it and the unproductive low paying company will simply go out of business (or start working for a ppp scheme).

Well one thing is certain if we don't stop living in a fantasy of 'its just a worldwide economic crisis and there are already green shoots of recovery' then we will be.

i'm sure that was exactly what he planned just as it took him quite a while to screw up the economy after he got control of it as chancellor.

No doubt many of those who bash unions are only to happy to take advantage of paid holidays, sick leave, etc, etc.Workers have rights precisely because our predecessors got organised and fought for justice.SAme with the vote really.
(Disclaimer:This is in no way bashing Tories.)

So true!
Whilst much of the free spending may have originated under Tory rule...this govt did nothing to curb it or even safeguard against the mess we are now in. It is all good and well blaming Maggie for everything, but she hasn't been here for 20yrs....and Brown has had 12ish yrs to try and fix it in one job or another...he chose not to.

it takes a lot to digest and admit mistakes, it's only when the shite hits the fan, that people will believe the warnings were there - and some years ago.

Exactamundo. Pretend you are "spending your way to recovery", then blame the Tories when they start reducing government spending. Politics is all about the gift of the gab and has nothing to do with the people's welfare.

[Hmmm, I'm not sure about your figure and what help such people get.
The point is, we will end up with less women going into politics, less men with school age children, less people who give a damn about their families.
I'm not sure you'd want that.
No I don't want that!....maybe they can have a flat rather than halls then...
As for not giving a damn about families...plenty of people who are with theirs 24/7 don't give a damn....seperation from them due to work doesn't stop you caring.
I wasn't implying that all people who are seperated from their families, due to work commitments, don't care, but most people would think twice about going into politics, if it meant leaving your young children and partners/spouses for most of the week.
They would also be less inclined to aspire to cabinet positions etc, so you'd end up with a less representative government.

well thats certainly true but what i dont get is that their gravy train is getting derailed and at the next election most of them will be off to the knackers yard so why prolong the agony and rub it in?

You can hardly call Frank Fields a 'cowardly bastard'. He has always spoken his mind.
As for your 'One is a start', have you not been watching the news?
Apparently....I heard on TV, but it may or may not be the case, that the labour bully boys are out in force 'encouraging' any potential rebels to support GB, while he clings to the cliff by his fingertips

Would any Guardian reader care? Daily Mail readers have inferiority and/or persecution complexes. That's probably why they read the Daily Mail in the first place. There must be some good reason for reading a comic like that.
*runs away*
I really don't understand this inverted snobbery against the Daily Mail. Most people who make disparaging remarks about the paper and its readers have probably never actually read it, so they don't know what they are talking about. They're just repeating a mantra they picked up somewhere which they think sounds clever.
Hi. I'm not most people. I read it every now and again to offset bias. I also variously read the Times, Guardian, and Independent. Moreover, I've comparatively assessed the paper as part of a philosophy/politics degree course in a media studies sort of way for its language, format, and so on.
Hope this helps.
