Whats your view on travellers?

we currently have a group of travellers in our area, they have been moved on 3 times so far, all 3 times they have set up home on local parks and left tonnes of mess behind

the children can't go on the parks as they are doing hand brake turns and driving about on quad bikes

whats your view on them? me i haven't got a problem if they had a proper site, but this must be a pain in the behind if you live near the parks

That I suspect is the answer.A proper regulated site,is the answer.When councils etc start farting about etc (bribes)therin lies the trouble..

I have no problem with folk who wish to have an alternative lifestyle, what I do object to however, is when they leave green fields and public areas in a total mess with broken cars, burnt out tyres etc. That bothers me big style.

I don't know much about it really, but, as a child of the late 60's 'Travelling' meant being young and not giving a damn.....I have long time since settled.....

yep.. what OHG says. When I read the post on broken cars , burnt tyres etc, that describes many bits of land, most of them nowt to do with travellers..
The bit about " alternative" lifestyles.. for some travellers it's not "alternative", it's how it's been for generations , and " alternative" there is settling .

Look I really never want to offend when I come on here and hope that by responding I am not going to start now.
I have personal experience of 'travellers' that came onto my property (yes it's my property and I've worked tremendoulsy hard for it and my house) and they totally destroyed the garden WITH burnt out cars, tyres, set up caravans and left human waste in vats around my home. They had pit bull terriers that terrorised me everytime I went out my front door.
I like to think I am a fair minded and liberal human being, but the OP asked a question and I have answered it. My experience has been horrendous.

If they land up in an an area then it must be for a reason and therefore they should be subject to local taxes the same as everyone else.

It saddens me to see what passes for "Travellers" these days.

back in the 80s, I was proud to be a member of the Rainbow Tribe; we tried to make sure that we didn't leave any area worse than we found it, and often better.

That's all gone now; battered out of existence in a field of beans...

how did it pan out in the end?

Well the police kept coming around but were apparently powerless to do anything. I was at my wits end and nearly had a breakdown. Eventually after much pleading from me and my husband and tonnes of media coverage & socail worker intervention they upped sticks early one morning and left. We had to get 2 large skips for the rubbish that was left behind. Sorry if my story has offended anyone here, but it was my experience and MY nightmare I hope I never have to endure it again.

travellers who use the officially designated sites pay council tax.. they don't always have access to the amenities that other council tenants do though. There's issues at a site near here about refuse collection ( monthly)and sporadic water supplies.

a school has been knocked down behind my house and there is a large open space and i have a feeling they will be arriving here soon

OK... I am in two minds on this one...

...I have a sort of fascination with the true romany gypsy style travellers... I dunno why, but they do interest me. And I would really really love to be able to defend their corner.

But my only personal experience of them is when they set up camp near my parents house (years ago) and tryed to nick my Nana's westie... and when they camped on land belonging to the hospital I worked at. When they were at the hospital, we had to park in the staff overflow car park (nicknamed the outer hebrides... due to its distance from the hospital)... and as we walked over to work they would shout at us and throw stuff at us... and we hadn't done anything to them.

It was really scary and intimidating!

I would love to have a positive experience of them, cos I would really love to love them.

Hi Tayto..they were who you mean. (not New age)

I'm not surprised. The law was changed here in ROI a few years ago and they now have carte blance to do anything they want.

I know who you mean and anybody else reading Holly's post knows who you mean..they are lazy, nasty, good for nothings, making other peoples lives a misery...........and I will not allow them to have a name....they are shite.....

I think the police should do more to prosecute those who DO break the law, the councils should do more to provide suitable sites and SOME people should be less anti.

Apart from that, I've checked my view and can't see any!
