When western films were in their heyday, did you have favourite cowboys?
There were the lighter, smiley, guitar-playing singing cowboys like Roy Rogers.
There were heavier, unsmiling, tougher ones lsuch as  John Wayne or Clint Eastwood.
(I didn't think much of John Wayne as an actor. Perhaps he could just about manage cowboys and soldiers - but anything else.....nah!)

As for Randolph Scott. Unsmiling, solid jaw, tough guy cowboy....
Yet in real life (apart from 2 failed marriages) there were many stories about his sexual orientation being 'uncertain' -  he lived with Cary Grant for a number of years.

Anyway I thought I would do a poll to find out who are our most popular cowboys.
Here are a few;-

Gene Autrey

Smiley Burnette

Hopalong Cassidy

Kirk Douglas

Clint Eastwood

Henry Fonda

Alan Ladd

Burt Lancaster

Robert Mitchum

Tex Ritter

Roy Rogers

Randolph Scott

James Stewart

John Wayne

Richard Widmark

Please add names of cowboys you have liked or disliked, and then I will compile a poll where we can vote for the most popular.  Thank you.

I'm afraid I despise John Wayne because of his stance on left leaning actors during the McCarthy era. He wasn't adverse to shopping actors whom he thought of as communists.
I love James Stewart and Robert Mitchum though.
I used to love these movies:

The stories were wriiten by Karl May.
Old Shatterhand was Lex Barker, Winnetou was Pierre Brice and Marie Versini played Winnetou's sister, I can't remember her character name.

He was in one of my favourite-ever films - called The Search - but that was not a western so it doesn't fit in with the theme of this thread. Very good in Red River I agree.
My favourite Monty Clift film is Wild River - but i find much of his work likeable - particularly The Search and From Here to Eternity.

Kurt Russell is my ultimate fantasy man.
