Oh actually Hallowe'en  has been a big deal up here in Scotland for yonks. It was called "Guisin'" (disguising) You went round doors (dressed up) in the street saying "Anything for Hallowe'en!" You had to to a "Turn" recite a poem or  sing etc.You got apples and nuts, maybe money if you were lucky. There was no "Trick or treat" etc. That is an Americanism.I suspect the Americans adopted it from the Scottish immigrants etc.

I'm another who really dislikes Halloween, the commercial one, anyway.
I never heard of it as a kid, then we moved abroad, close to America, and it was a regular thing to go trick and treating. When I returned here, it still wasn't a feature. That's why I always thought it was an American thing to do, not from this side of the pond.

I tend to keep the curtains drawn, the lights off or low, and hide away at the back of the house. Don't like to answer the door living alone.

I went trick or treating when I was a teenager.... it was a new thing then... we used to do it for about 4 nights over halloween.

For last few years I just get a big bowl of lollies, chews, cheap sweets etc....  A few years back you would get the little kids earlier on (with parent)... and then towards the end a group of teenagers trying it on ... give em a chew - what can they do?

HOwever our town started this Halloween incentive thing for teenagers a couple of years ago.   On Halloween night, the cinema is free to them.  And certain buses free also.

Since they started doing this, we haven't seen anyone trick or treating after 7pm... just the odd few little kids earlier on.

Oh, and, FWIW... I never let my kids do it either.
