Do you mean lack of law and order ?

I just don't see how anyone could feel they have some entitlement to brutally assault someone due to their attire/style but then I just don't really understand the mindset of intolerant thugs I suppose.

Yes... still got the merc (surprised at you remembering that), it's a little worse for wear but still gets me where I'm want to go.

Middle-aged thug stamped on young woman's head in vicious 'hate crime' simply because she was dressed as a goth

  • Kenneth Kelsall headbutted victim before stomping on her face in attack on crowded train
  • Accomplice Gareth Farrar bundled Melody McDermott into the corner of the carriage so the assault could continue
  • Attack has chilling echoes of 2008 killing of Goth student Sophie Lancaster who was beaten to death by two teenagers in a park

Melody (22) suffered a fractured eye socket and swelling to her face and body and Stephen sustained a black eye and an ear injury in the attack on a Metrolink passenger tram near Bury, Greater Manchester.

Ordeal: Melody McDermott, 22, suffered a fractured eye socket and swelling to her face and body while her then boyfriend Stephen Stafford sustained a black eye and an ear injury

Somebody on a call- in to Radio5 live said that ppl become less tolerant when they have to tighten the belt. I agree and this story is probably one example of it. If we were all in a position of being well fed, having all the trappings of whatever me may think of as necessary, the elements of society who want to hate, would not have a leg to stand on.

I'm sorry but that's just a poor excuse... and that's all it is imo.. an excuse, there are plenty of people out there who struggle to get by and manage not to go out beating people up for no reason

Only the other day, my daughter was telling me how shocked she has been by the racism and homophobia that she has encountered at secondary school.

But how do you do it?  Two middle aged dickheads who kick off because someone's a goth FCS!  Honestly Blizz'ard, I don't think tolerance isn't the key here at all. You could lobotomise them, I suppose.

After all, when it comes to goths, there's not much to object to!  It's not like goths are 'taking all the jobs', 'are all on benefits', socialists, fascists or forcing their religion down people's throat or any other socio-economic excuse for hatred.  They're just people who are a bit campy about horror themes.  There hasn't really been a goth music scene for decades.

These were two ageing thugs who get off on violence and don't need a substantial reason.  Supporting another football club would probably do also.  They could quite possibly have goth mates.  The victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time when two psychopathic losers were looking for their kicks.

It's tragic but it's the human condition.  I guess for most of human history, humans have been at war with neighbouring tribes and then nations and felt few pangs of guilt over butchering their enemies.

I guess with the building of societies where empathy is the necessary glue to bind and enlarge a community, the psychopathic tendency may have been bred out to a large extent but psychopaths are predatory and that's an evolutionary and social advantage where the majority aren't psychopaths.

That's my pet and somewhat amoral theory, anyway.

I don't know how you do it, but it depresses me that my kids' generation is still full of intolerant bigots. It all seems fine in Primary School and then suddenly the kids in Secondary School are splitting into different camps, based on race, fashion, music taste, religion, class etc.

I know that won't help with middle-aged bigots, but surely we can work with the youngsters?

Blizz'ard

I've said it before I believe but I just have no tolerance for intolerance.

Truth is I'm saddened as much as angered by such incidents.

I went out last night (to a goth/industrial club as it happens) and spent the whole journey there listening to the taxi driver spout racist nonsense. A prize prat, no doubt he probably spouted to his next hire about the freak he had in his cab earlier. Needless to say he recieved no tip.

As for a solution.... Unfortunately I don't think there are any easy answers though I do think the best chance of changing societal attitudes is with the upcoming generations.

Comrade Ogilvy

I was part of the late70's/early 80's scene that later became 'goth' Three of my friends got attacked in a grocery store b

y the same sort these guys probably were back then. Unfortunately for them, two of my friends,  despite sporting eye make-up and long crimped hair, were very handy in a fight and absolutely hammered them!

Good for them Kimota though unfortunate of course that it was necessary.

I generally get a fair amount of comments (which in itself is really uncalled for, why can't people just mind their own business ?) but other than one incident a couple of months ago which was quickly resolved I've not had too much hassle.

Years ago I was attacked from behind by a group (about 5 or 6) which resulted in no permanent damage but a visit to A&E, they'd hit me over the head with a bottle splitting my scalp. Quite bloody but no stitches needed.

That's horrible Comrade A friend of mine had similar from some random bloke on a tube train. I am glad to say that the worst I got was a few jeers and a person whistling the theme to Blackadder whilst staring at me.
