We have robins, i was trying to get a photo the other day in the snow as they looked so cute. We have a lot of robins all year round. We have blackbirds (same two as had babies earlier this year in my rosebush ) other than that some massive fat pigeons and crows.

and i did put some food out for them on a plate in the snow, but they didnt touch it

Also the Robin! The occasional coal tit, and the ubiquitous magpie.

We put out birdseed on the bird table but the bigger birds like something more substantial. I've been putting out batter scraps from the chippie and even the left over chips .............very popular with the greedy starlings. We've actually run out  of the bird seed so put out some rice crispies earlier ...................it remains to bee seen how well that goes down 

I must be getting very old ..............can never imagine getting so much enjoyment out of watching the birds in the garden when I was younger

We've got a fieldfare coming round to get fed as well as the robins, bluetits  ( no wonder! ) ,starlings  etc.. and a couple of what looks like  doves
Had a squirrel trying to get in the other day too  ..  right up at the window  ,paws on the glass

Some of the seagulls here seem to be getting vicious, swooping and diving

Not in this weather! 

I feed the birds in my garden, all year round.
Yesterday, we had a some chaffinches, coal tits, great tits, blue tits, starlings, sparrows, blackbirds, collared doves,  a couple of rooks and a robin.
It's also a good idea to put out some water for the birds, in this weather.

I feed the birds everyday...I get up in the morning and theres a load of wood pigeons waiting for me. I also get sparrows, starlings, magpies, blackbirds, robins, blue tits, wagtails and parakeets.

In all the years I've been hearing about the flocks of parakeets in south London, I've still never seen them

Go to Oxleas Wood or Eltham Crenatorium, that's where you see flocks of them. We do get a fair few as well especially in the summer when they rob all the cherries off the top branches of our cherry tree!

Wow ...........I've never heard about it.What's all that about? Did some pet birds escape or something?

Ive got bird feeders out all year round.A peanut feeder and a seed feeder,I also hang out suet balls for them.Poor things must be really suffering,especially here in Glasgow we still have bloody 9 day old snow lying frozen solid,then another 4 inches fell yesterday.It's not to rise above freezing today.All sorts of birds Sparrows,Starlings,chaffinches,robins,coal tits,blue tits,great tits,long tailed tits,blackbirds,dunnocks,green finches,wood pigeons,feral pigeons,collared doves.Magpies,carrion crows,black headed gulls,herring gulls,lesser black backed gulls.seen  few wrens skulking about too.

Save your old fat etc from the grill put into a plate and put out for them once solid.I also buy a block of lard ,it's dead cheap,melt it into a bowl,let it harden again  and put that out.

I was a bit of a bird nut when younger,I  used to buy bird magazines,so still have an interest in them evn now.

Oh and white bread is pretty useless to them,there's no nutrition in it,unless you soak it in fat and let it harden then chuck out.

Mr sweet has been making a big effort to feed the birds, we've got blackbirds, doves, robins, sparrows, jackdoors, starlings and there was a great tit earlier in the year :-)



We put a variety of proper bird foods out, but they go crazy for tesco's value digestive biscuits!

They're really well known in south London.  I've heard that they are descended from some pet birds which escaped many years ago.  They often sit in the trees in my Mum's garden, but I've been waiting years to see them 

Just out of interest - where in South London? I'm originally from South London and am curious to know.

My mum lives in Sidcup. I'm in Forest Hill, and most people I know round here have seen them.  I think they must hide whenever I look outside

Outside the bedroom window this morning was a tiny bird with a white head - only caught a glimpse any ideas?

^^^^^^ nice pic by the way. My personal fave in my garden is the Wagtail - he's a very tenacious little fellow and gets stuck in with the bigger birds.

I have Robins, Blackbirds, big fat wood pigeons, starlings, coal tits, magpies, wrens and cyril the squirrel 

I feed the birds all year round - all sorts of birds.
I have bird feeders - peanuts, seed, and suet balls.
I put some broken up brown bread rolls out for them yesterday but they were covered in snow before they got to it.
It`s melting now - the robins are picking away at it. It`s lovely to watch.

Scotty putting plates of lard out is fine in the cold weather,however don't do it if (some chance!) the temp gets high enough to soften the lard too much,they can then get it on their feathers etc and it damages them.

I was just wondering about the higher temps before you posted.
I`ve got some lovely sausage and bacon fat here - they`re in for a treat 
I enjoy this weather but I do worry about the birds and the other creatures who have no access to food.

Don`t forget to put water out for them - it might freeze over quite quickly but some get to it before it does.

Like Scotty we feed the birds all year round and our garden always has lots of different birds hanging around ...... gives us great pleasure watching them ..... particularly the cheeky little bluetits .....they're so cocky and fearless
