UB40 coulda been anything if their producer wasn't unfortunately killed after the first album
UB40 had a fantastic start but ended up being utter cod reggae crap. It speaks volumes of the quality of their subsequent work that they toured their first album recently.
Try listening to Ali Campbell's last and abysmal solo effort of cod reggae covers to see how far an artist can fall.
Here he spits on, pees on, napalms, murders, buries, dances on the grave of, and goes on to murder the family and friends of The Kinks' You Really Got Me
Of late I have afforded UB40 a little more benefit of the doubt and now listen to their music up until and inclusive of the 4th album; Labour of Love (1983). Previously my interest had not stretched beyond Present Arms and as a kid nothing beyond the One in Ten single engaged my interest.

Personally I'd ignore Labour of Love, it's a pretty lame album of pedestrian covers of pop-friendly rocksteady/reggae tunes mostly done better by the original artists. IMO
DD at their best, DD at their most close to Bowie genius
Listening to the whole thing, no skipping.
This is such a beautiful song and this version with Mrs on her ole violin is even better! i would put a heart here if i could be arsed to google one
