After an initial reluctance to use them I must say now I much prefer them. Tesco's have about the easiest, M&S's are a pain.

My husband loves them. I like the ones they have in Sainsbury's and Waitrose that yuo carry around.
depends what im buying, if its something that you need id for then i dont bother with them..too much hassle..but otherwise i normally use them
I quite like them because I've had a few lucky accidents with them such as finding a few quid in the change slot but I hate the whole concept of them; they seem too modern and it's nice to chat to people at the checkouts sometimes too.

Carry around Never seen them Suzi.
I prefer them but I am total shite at working them.
The ones in Asda annoy me when they keep telling you to 'insert cash' - I am always fumbling about trying to find my purse shouting OK OK

I don't mind them if I have only a few bits.Otherwise I prefer the ordinary checkout.
I would if they worked properly....every bluddy time I have to have the assistant over to push some button or other.
Admittedly I might just be doing it wrong.

My only reservation using them is that they're doing people out of a job.
I do prefer them but I try not to use them when possible as I don't want to encourage the retailers to cut staff.

'Unidentified object in the bagging area...please remove items from the bagging area...something is wrong in the bagging area."
The constant repetition of 'bagging area' from the Tesco ones drives me crazy
Have to agree with MoFo. 2 out of 3 times I use them, an assistant has to come to help, because they say 'unexpected item in bagging area' or 'please scan again, please scan again,' when I have already scanned. I rarely use them as they rarely work properly first time (for me anyway.)quote:Originally posted by MoFo:

They're hand held scanners. It keeps a running tab of what you've spent too, but they don't work on reduced stuff.

Agreed
I only use then if I have half a dozen items or less.I don't think they allow you to use them with a big trolley load anyway. Our ASDA states around 20 items or so.

Never seen them. They haven't got them in the Sainsbury I sometimes use.

Didn't know that katty. So there will always be a job for a checkout assistant
I like the idea of them, but they are too rigid for me!

Or Please remove the bags! Drives you up the wall!
Our local Tesco which had them, was pulled down and replaced by a Tesco Extra. They didn't install Self Service checkouts in the new store. I reckon too much stuff "walked" through them.
Love them, so much easier But then I am a hooj geek
Although, when they first came out, hardly anyone used them and you never had to wait in a queue. Now people are realising they're easy to use

I have to say, I have never used one

Self-service checkouts hate me.

They get easier with practice, although they also bug me at times, when they won't allow you to put the stuff into your own bag, if its not in the appointed area They need to rewrite some of the software, to make it not so restrictive.
You do know if you use them you are adding to the un-employment stats.....
Ours is the other way round, we didn't have them in the old shop, but now that they've built a giant Tesco Extra there's a few self service ones. I very rarely have few enough items to use them.quote:Originally posted by Jenny:quote:Originally posted by angelicarwen:

M&S ones have a 'using own bag' option now, cos it detects something on the scales and doesn't know what it is. Thats good I think Tesco ones dont seem to be that sensitive
A Tesco near me only have self - service tills between 12.00am and 8.00am
At least you can choose use own bag to avoid it in the Sainsburys one. Otherwise it constantly whines about unidentified object in the bagging area. I only use them if the shop is very busy.quote:Originally posted by angelicarwen:quote:Originally posted by mary_bee:quote:Originally posted by angelicarwen:

Not me. I always end up having to get an assistant over. Their alright if you just have one or two items but not for a big shop.
I have always shied away from using them cos I think I will muck it up... but I will give it a go now that everyone says they are good...
Only use them if you have heavy stuff though. If you buy anything that's too light it gets confused and then you have to jump up and down on the conveyor belt to persuade it you have placed something on it.
This generally upsets the staff.

Hate them they alway say say unidenified object in bagging area hate supermarkets

I only use them if i have 5 items or less, any more than that i freak out and so does the mechine, it doesn't tell you properly what you scanned in, a few times i've scanned things in twice or by accident and i have to get help, i do like them but i'm a little scared of them.

They have some in Morrisons in Grantham. Completely different way of working to the Tescos and Sainsburys ones. I got in a right twist and there were loads of people behind me glaring and tutting, clutching their single packs of sandwiches.
I know this is really naughty but ...............i can't trust myself - never been through one cos I know I'd be sorely tempted even if it were just a '32p' item or something.
Surely I'm not on my own here.
As I say .................I wouldn't dream of going through one
