Perfect team Velvet
I'm leaning towards the Big Yin at the minute
Wasn't there a law passed sometime during early 70s that every entertainer had to include in their routine Des O'Connor's singing, Dolly Parton's cleavage, Cyril Smith being fat and British Rail/BBC canteen sandwiches?
Personally, I've never found Eric and Ern funny at all.

Everyone to their own though

Absolutely! But they never were funny and their comedy just relies on all the same jokes that all the other comedians were doing at the time.
I recall those boring Des O'Conor/BBC canteen jokes doing the rounds until the mid 80s. Say what you like about Ben Elton and his lot of 'alternative to being funny' comedians, but they replaced a lot of very tiresome acts.
I preferred the Two Ronnies, not that their comedy has aged very well either!
See now, I thought Ben Elton was pure unadulterated sh*te, although I agree M&W and The Two Ronnies are dated now. I like a lot of comedians today, but there are far more overrated now than back in the day in my opinion.
See....Ben Elton, I could never get away with. Not only him but the other so called 'alternative' comedians either. I like something that gives me a good belly laugh and he/they weren't it

Even though a lot of it wasn't funny, I remember the alternative comedians (back in the day) giving me more belly laughs than any of the old school comedians ever did.
A lot of the alternative comedy hasn't aged well and a lot of alternative comedians haven't been funny for years. Lenny Henry and French and Saunders being the worst IMO.
I still say that stupid in-jokes about the BBC canteen and Des O'Connor's singing was shite comedy and not in the least bit funny. Morecambe & Wise were one of the worst offenders for that.
I liked them.
A lot

me too Donks...timing was perfect, it didn't have to be about jokes
Yup........again
Was never a big fan of Eric and Ern but from that era ..................Tommy Cooper - just looking at him used to make me laugh

See, there again....IMO, too daft to be funny.
I didn't get Norman Wisdom either *Runs*

I liked him too Sooz....the jokes were crap, the delivery was genius
I think it's because I go with the comedians that take the pee out of life. I dunno
No-one went out on a note like that!

too right Velvet...that always brings a smile
Ya got that right!
One of my favourite lines is from the Andrew Preview sketch.
"I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order".
The breakfast sketch is classic too.
I loved Eric Morecambe (Ernie a little less). Ronnie Barker, a genius.
Watch the clips of his final live appearance with Stan Stennett - it's humourous but never unkind. And that's where M&W and the Two Ronnies differ from the alternative comedians.... they were gentle.
And besides, comedy/comedians are of their time so it's bound to follow that very few seem quite as funny when you look back.

Brilliant!
I like Tony Hancock. Weirdly, as a child of 5 or 6, I'd listened to him on the radio. I couldn't understand a word said, but I laughed with the audience and loved every minute of it and I always wanted to marry an English farmer, but ended up with a Scottish riding instructor.

I would say there's been thousands of moments of comedy that are more funnier than the "Breakfast Sketch" or "Fork Handles".
I know I'm on dodgy ground here because millions really do love Morcambe and Wise but what annoys me about Morecambe and Wise is that there's always someone telling me, "oh you must like this or you haven't got a sense of humour". Well that's subjective, and I don't like being told why something's funny - if it makes me laugh, then it's funny - if it doesn't, it isn't - to me.
Some people may be able to watch the Breakfast Sketch endlessly and find it hilarious every time, but not me, I'm not a big fan of slapstick anyway.
I probably did find the Breakfast Sketch very funny when it was first aired but 'funny' to me is diminishing returns. Knowing the punchline spoils the joke, particularly with visual humour!
Try playing your favourite song on continuous repeat and see how long it takes you to begin to hate it!

it was the way they told them !
It wasn't so much the material with Morecambe and Wise , the interaction between the pair was funny. The unscripted bits were probably funniest . They still crack me up ( unlike Ben Elton, whose material was probably good, but delivered a bit too much smug right-on git - loved him at the time but kind of cringe watching the stuff back now)

That kind of sums up Ben Elton for me!
