I only get birthday reminders on my alerts, not on my ticker.I have my ticker set so that every Thread that is started in here and BB shows and those started by my 'buddies'. I only get 'replies' to threads I have started and those few I have chosen to watch.

The latest blogs are on the panel at the right. click on 'more at the bottom of that list and you'll get a longer list.
When on a page in Live Cloud the top bar has 'EXPLORE' you can get the blogs there as well.

At the moment you don't,but there's a suggestion in one of the threads in the support forum that indicates the twitters and the 'REAL' blogs will be split soon.
