Ok. I've investigated thoroughly.

The three holey things are definitely holding the three pronged thing on. The spindly thing in the middle is fixed solidly to the 3 prong thing and is not attached to the drum at all (I can put something underneath it and out the other side).

The only way I'm getting off the 3 pronged thing is with a very large drill bit. It's gonna cost me a fortune to get a drill that can handle a drill that works on metal and is that large.

So I reckon the brick idea is the way to go Or something like that. A stand of some kind?

Or, I could potentially get a hack saw and chop it off. But I have this little issue with metal on metal.... *shudders*

Ducky, a 1cm(10mm) drill bit shouldn't cost that much tbh but the brick idea is good

Moonie

I have a 10mm drill bit Moons and it's too small. My drill is only a cheap thing (an ex boyfriend bought it for me for Christmas when I was 22 so it's also very old .   ) and doesn't take bits bigger than 10mm....so I would need to buy a whole new drill.

I've looked at some, but they don't come with drill bits bigger than 8mm for metal. For wood the go up to 20mm.

Can I get away with using a bit designed for wood?

I'm actually thinking I may have a go at hacksawing the spindle thing off now anyway. If that doesn't work... it's back to bricks!

Tbh Ducky it has to be a metal drill bit. One designed for wood would be dangerous to use on metal

Yep, I would stick with the bricks

But...but that would be denying an obvious truth

Because it's attached to that bit that sticks up in the middle, so at the moment it's a bit like a huge spinning top

But if you place the drum on soil or lawn, it's not going to affect the function of it as a planter.

Yeah, that's definitely an option Jackson. It's only cos I'm being fussy and want it on my patio.

Planks!

Put planks under it, raise it up a bit, will look good and rustic.

I already have a railway sleeper in my garden. I hollowed it out planted rockery type plants in it. I could stick with the theme.

I'm on catch up and this may have been resolved but, if you can't get the three pronged thing off why not make some feet and stick them in the holes so the spindle bit is raised off the ground and the drum stands on three feet... not sure when you could get them from but maybe you could fashion some from the rest of the machine?

btw that machine looked spiffing compared to mine..shame it broke. .mind you mine looks rough cos it was a wedding present in 1982 so is a tad ancient and rusty..

That's a great idea Olly

Moonie

Problem solved!

I can't take the credit for this one, it was all Dudsy's work. It's the round thing that the spindle thing was originally attached to...but upside down so it acts like a stand. It's proper proper sturdy and everything.

Now I just need to wait for reasonable weather so I can spray paint it outside.

See you back here in March.

Ducky

Washing machine planter update...... (no pics till it's finished, so shush)

I had to wait for aaaaaaages to spray paint it because of our crappy British weather, but I finally managed to find a few hours of sunshine a couple of weekends ago.

Face mask on (goggles abandoned due to misting up), I sprayed till my arm hurt (genuinely - it's about time they invented spray cans for wimps). I'd chosen a browny coloured stone effect paint.....and it looked totally rubbish!

I tried to pretend I liked it for a few days, forgot to spray the sealer on the top, it rained, and turned to mush.

So I decided to stop pretending I liked it, bought a can of green metal paint, and I now have a beautiful green drum! And in the words of Duds..."it's metal and it knows it's metal" Interpretation for those that don't speak Duds - "it looks amazing". He also couldn't resist telling me he said it should be green from the start, but we'll ignore that.  My garden does have a green theme - green fence, multi-coloured green (and bloody beautiful) shed...so I suppose it makes sense.

So, this weekend I shall be finally planting plants in the damn thing.  And I shall be back with pretty photos when it's all done.

Ducky
