I don't think it was cos it's not April 1st, but I heard the Channel 5 headlines last night that Gino and one of the other contestants on IACGMOOH are going to be charged with animal cruelty, after catching a rat and cooking it in a risotto.
The argument is that it is not the kind of thing people would like to see on an entertainment programme.
Would this be the entertainment programme that features eating live creatures as a very popular (for the viewers anyway) bushtucker trial?
I don't understand.

It's true, and about time.
I don't watch IAC for that very reason. Why is killing, eating or injuring small critters supposed to be entertaining? And why is it allowed in the first place? If I was in a genuine life-or-death situation, I'd eat whatever was available if my survival depended on it. But I wouldn't do it for telly ratings on some stupid show for has-beens.
Pity no-one in officialdom has reacted before now, but I suppose they don't consider biting live invertebrates in half to be cruel, because they're "only" bugs.

I dont see how killing the rat is any worse than this, and the show has been doing it for years... and dropping loads of insects on people, some of which obviously get stepped on. The show is hardly an advert for animal welfare is it?

Temps 1033 Forum PostsToday at 11:16 AM (Edited: ) I heard this on the news alright. I don't watch I'm a Celeb so didn't see what happened, but I did hear some head of the RSPCA in Aus saying that there are rules about what you can do with animals in an entertainment programme.
I don't watch it either Temps - but that is my point - it's a programme that features that exact same past time as part of the programme, so there seems to be one law for the programme makers and a different one for the contestants.

No it isn't. Bliddy horrible and unnecessary all round, IMO. I don't see how killing that poor rat is any worse than biting a live bug in half, either. None of it should be allowed, it's cruel and stupid.

is reason i dont watch it...though my OH does

i spose they get away with the bugs by saying they dont have a backbone so dont feel pain...but i dont see it as much different. although i love rats so that upsets me on a more personal level. they use (very small) alligators etc too but tie their mouths closed so the poor celebs dont get hurt . they even do somethint to spiders fangs to stop them biting. but nothing is done to stop these animals getting squashed, eaten or killed.

Well said.

I congratulate the journalist who alerted the Australian RSPCA, just wonder why it's taken so long for them to know what the Producers or whoever think they can get away with for the sake of their idea of "entertainment". The ITV lawyers are doing what they can to stop Gino and Stuart from having to go to Australia in February to answer the charges, I hope money doesn't buy off what should apply to everyone whether tv companies, celebs, or anyone else that thinks it's ok to harm or kill any living creature for their own pleasure. As for killing the rat because they were hungry - try telling that to those in Biafra and other areas of the world who really know what hunger and starvation is, they die because of it.

well not many would. i doubt Gino and Stuart really did either. a rat is wandering in the camp they probably think it's wild etc. esp as they choose the wild looking varieties to use in the show. the producers knew it to be different though.

mind you i have to ask why Gino though he needed to eat the rat? he had protein in the beans..he dind;t need flavour like he said (though i remember the arguement about salt cos of taste...but how does he know what rat tastes like? lol) was it to show off what a 'great' chef he was? or was it cos he missed his meat too much?

Well said! Those silly sods were hardly going to die of starvation, were they? And as others have said, it was a tame rat, so hardly a fair contest. Bet they felt like "real men" for slaughtering it. Poor little thing - it probably wandered in because it thought those two idiots would be friendly.

if we leave the emotion out of the argument for a minute, i know if i had a rat in my house, i'd  call the pest control people in, who would either poison it, causing it to bleed internally or use a dog to  dig it out. the end result would be a dead rat.
the reasons for slaying the rat  would not matter to  the rat, because it would still be dead.
