Comedian Victoria Wood has died aged 62 after "a short but brave" battle with cancer.

"The multi Bafta award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her north London home with family this morning," Neil Reading said.

"The family ask for privacy at this very sad time."

Wood found fame in the 1980s with her TV series Victoria Wood As Seen On TV and was awarded an CBE in 2008.

She won five Baftas including two for her one-off ITV drama Housewife 49.

Her family posted on her Twitter account: 'Thank you for your love and support at this very hard time. We leave you with these words from Victoria. X'

The post was followed by the quote: 'Life's not fair is it? Some of us drink champagne in the fast lane, and some of us eat our sandwiches by the loose chippings on the A597.' "

I can just see her saying that too

Sad news indeed. RIP

So shocked and saddened by this news.

I loved her humour - The Ballad of Barry and Freda, comedy sketches, stand up comedy, Pat and Margaret, Dinnerladies, Housewife49, Eric and Ernie - she was absolutely brilliant.

May she RIP.

I was also shocked to hear the news: she was a comic genius and it's a great loss.

It's all pretty-much been said already, so let's just have a laugh with Victoria and one of the truly great comedy songs (and apologies in advance for the unseasonal ending - this is from her 2009 Christmas Special):
