I'd agree with that.

I'd never eat prawns (or any shellfish even one day over) - beef and lamb improves with age - I'm more careful with pork and mince though.

Cheese, milk, eggs - I go by the nose (or float test for eggs) - veg I go on looks alone.

I think a lot of stuff with 'sell by - or use by' dates are quite ridiculous and often a bit of a scam to get you to buy more often than you need.

You only do a sniff test when there is doubt.

When in doubt ...throw it out

This is me, i would feel ill eating something i wasn't sure was ok to eat

Havent read full thread yet but there is a difference in sell/use/display by dates.... Use by on meat/dairy I'm quite careful about but like Aims says up there, other things like fruit and veg only have a 'best before' meaning it is ok to eat after this date. So things like biscuits etc are ok after they reach best before.

We had a bottle of Chablis xmas day dated 2006 lovely jubbly - yet a 2lt bottle of milk was binned 2/3 days before the sell by date.

Noticed a "ready made meal" that we bought had a hole in the film lid - food looked perfect / untouched - but where had the damage occurred; in our fridge, transporting it home...or earlier? Binned it...

As it is, I don't buy much from any of the supermarkets anyway; I'm old fashioned and use the butcher, greengrocer or farm, fishmonger and the deli.

I am with both of you on this - I glance at dates but usually use the look and smell before cooking - if in doubt chuck it out

I buy a lot from the butcher - farm shop and baker - never a date in sight

That sounds nice - rather a lot of work for just a drink though!
