A battling Dan Evans could not take his surprise US Open run into the second week as he lost to Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo in four sets.

The Briton, 23, had two set points on his own serve to force a decider but could not convert, and Robredo won the third-round match 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 4-6 7-5 in three hours and 13 minutes.

Robredo, who struggled with a leg injury in the closing stages, fought back superbly from 5-3 down in the fourth set to claim victory.

Andy Murray's match against Florian Mayer is second in the Arthur Ashe stadium today so is likely to be later afternoon UK time. That is followed by the match between Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens. Although Williams is strong favourite to win, Sloane Stephens is the rising star of American tennis. That match is followed by Novak Djokovic's match.

A great effort from Evans this week - and something for him to build upon, hopefully.

Cold Sweat

Defending champion Andy Murray saw off Germany's Florian Mayer in straight sets on a steamy New York afternoon to reach the last 16 of the US Open.

The third seed, 26, looked out of sorts in the opening stages but found his form to win 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 6-2.

He moves into the fourth round for the sixth time and will face Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin on Tuesday.

Roger Federer's hopes of winning a sixth US Open title ended with a shock fourth-round defeat by Spain's Tommy Robredo in New York.

The 32-year-old Swiss, who lost in the second round of Wimbledon two months ago, went down 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-4 on the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Federer converted just two of 16 break points and made 43 unforced errors - 20 on his favoured forehand side - as he lost in two hours and 24 minutes.

I sense we are coming to the end of the Roger Federer era

Andy Murray beat Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin in the first New York night session of his US Open title defence to set up a quarter-final against Stanislas Wawrinka on Thursday.

The Briton was irritated by a number of bad line calls and struggled for consistency on a windy evening, but was not seriously threatened in a 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-4 6-4 win.

Murray, 26, was given prime-time billing on Arthur Ashe Stadium and duly delivered the expected victory to reach his 17th Grand Slam quarter-final.

However, it was hard going over three hours and seven minutes after he let a winning position slip in the first set, and it was 11.44pm local time (04:44 BST) by the time he punched away the winning volley.

He will next face ninth seed Wawrinka on Thursday after the Swiss upset fifth seed Tomas Berdych 3-6 6-1 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Andy Murray's US Open title defence ended tamely as Swiss ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka outplayed him in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

The Briton, seeded third, failed to earn a single break point in a 6-4 6-3 6-2 defeat on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Murray has struggled to find his best form since winning Wimbledon two months ago and his frustration was clear when he was given a code violation for racquet abuse.

"It was a tough day for me," Murray told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He played exceptional tennis and served very, very well. He hit a lot of lines on big points, went for his shots and they all went in today. He played too well."

In a match many had predicted would go to five sets, it took only two hours and 15 minutes for Wawrinka's brilliant attacking game to prevail on a hot and blustery afternoon in New York.

The 28-year-old moves on to his first Grand Slam semi-final, where he will face world number one Novak Djokovic who beat 21st seed Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-0 in the night session.

Defending champion Serena Williams will face second seed Victoria Azarenka in a rematch of 2012's US Open final after they swept through their semi-finals.

Belarusian Azarenka beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium in a match with 13 breaks of serve.

Williams, the 31-year-old world number one, then needed seven match points before sealing a convincing 6-0 6-3 win in the second semi-final.

Not surprising results and the final should be good. I think that Serena Williams will be the champion.

Second seed Rafael Nadal powered past France's Richard Gasquet to set up a US Open final against world number one Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard, 27, was tested in the second set but came through 6-4 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 in two hours and 21 minutes.

Nadal, the 2010 champion, extended his unbeaten run on hard courts this year to 21 matches - despite dropping serve for the first time in the tournament.

World number one Novak Djokovic reached his fourth straight US Open final with a stunning five-set win over Stanislas Wawrinka in New York.

Djokovic came back from a set and a break down - as he had against the Swiss ninth seed at the Australian Open in January - to win 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Like the Women's tournament, no surprises as to who the finalists are. Nadal may be ranked second in the world but that is because of having missed grand slam events through injury. It is likely that by the end of the US Open he will be champion and regain the number one place in the rankings.

World number one Serena Williams won her fifth US Open title in a thrilling final against Victoria Azarenka at Flushing Meadows.

The American, 31, overcame a determined opponent and a testing wind to win 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 and repeat last year's final victory against the Belarusian.

Williams has now won 17 Grand Slam singles titles, moving her to within one of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, and seven short of Margaret Court's record total of 24.

But after letting a double-break lead slip in the second set, and twice failing to serve out the match, Williams was made to dig as deep as in any of her 16 previous major wins.

"Vika's such a great opponent, such a great fighter and that's why she's been able to win multiple Grand Slams," Williams said of Azarenka after their contest.

"That's why it was never over until match point.''

Azarenka, 24, had beaten Williams twice this year, the last time in Cincinnati on the eve of the US Open, and clearly believed she could defeat the American on a bigger stage.

Williams looked in ominously good form when she cracked a backhand cross-court to break in the opening game, but a couple of errors gave the advantage straight back.

Azarenka was dealing better with the gusting wind on Arthur Ashe Stadium and serving well, in marked contrast to Williams, who also had to cope with a skirt that was clearly not designed for such conditions.

Serving to stay in the set at 4-5, a nervous Williams came up with a double fault and a foot fault, but fought her way out of trouble with two tremendous backhands and an ace.

The pressure suddenly switched to Azarenka and, now swinging freely, Williams hammered a cross-court forehand and a return at the second seed's feet to clinch the set in 58 minutes

Williams was on a roll and broke twice in the second set on her way to a 4-1 lead, but Azarenka regrouped and got one of the breaks back as the American endured more skirt issues and sent a forehand wide.

The champion still had the comfort of that second break - but faltered twice with victory in her sights.

A double fault and a wayward backhand saw the chance disappear at 5-4, and Williams missed with two backhands at 6-5 and then, to gasps from the 23,000 spectators, double faulted for a seventh time.

When Williams missed another backhand to offer up two set points in the tie-break, she swiped her racquet in anger, appearing close to tears, and despite seeing off the immediate danger, the pressure told and she sent a backhand long when facing a third set point.

Williams could see another Grand Slam title slipping away but she responded superbly to dominate the final set.

Azarenka had served for the title last year, so knew all about going into a decider against Williams, but at 2-1 down she double faulted on break point. When the American broke for the seventh time, the contest appeared all but over.

There was one more flutter of nerves for Williams when she netted on her first match point, but Azarenka put a backhand over the baseline moments later to send the American leaping deliriously in celebration after two hours and 45 minutes of tension.

"It is a tough loss, but to be in the final and play against the best player, who deserves to win today, it's incredible,'' said Azarenka.

"I gave it all today. We showed our hearts. We fought hard.''
