I would have liked to have posted the original video clip of the performance they gave at Wembley in the late 1960s, but sadly it is no longer possible to embed it or download it.

But here is the link:-

Tompall and the Glaser brothers were outstanding harmony singers.

One of the unique things they did is shown in these videos.

They specialised in different musical ranges.

One brother would take over from another at the end of a phrase.

Then another brother would pick-up mid-phrase.

Then, amazingly (as happens towards the end of these clips) they pick up the singing in the middle of a word.  And you can't tell where the join is. Amazingly clever!

Tompall and Jim Glaser did this so well, and Chuck Glaser was the quiet one in the middle at the back who gave the whole thing body and balance. Lovely!

Another point, if I may (sorry to go on...) they stand together and use one microphone.

None of this face-mike nonsense for them. Face mikes where everybody is singing for themselves. Here we have one microphone where they can really hear each other - and the end product is so much better.

Sadly the Wembley performance - when they were in their prime - cannot be embedded here, but if you'd like to see it I urge you to click on the link above (^^^^)

Alternatively, here they are doing the same type of singing, using the same medley of songs, but this is 21 years later, so there is a difference.

(I hope I have explaind clearly the technique of taking over from each during a line, phrase or word.) Splendid stuff!

Thanks squiggle - you're welcome.

They are available on CD.

I don't know about mp3 (because I don't posses one and I don't understand them).

Unfortunately, that remarkable medley where they do their speciality of picking up from each other in the middle of a line or a word, is not available as far as I know. I hope I am wrong about that.

So pleased you liked them squiggle.

Splendid harmony singing.

Splendid harmony singing.

I'm watching that first clip again this morning.  I could kick myself for never having known about them.  I love good country music (to go and see it performed live is just amazing, I went to see Don Williams live and could have sat there for a week quite happily just listening to him) AND I am a harmony nut.  I was a member of the Everly Brothers fan club (the only fan club I ever joined) and I love to hear good harmony singing how did I miss Tompall and the Glaser Brothers?   I looked on Amazon and the CD's cost a fortune (like over ÂĢ100 ) wonder if you can get 'em cheaper elsewhere.  But as you say its seeing them taking over the singing in the middle of a line (or even a word) and just enjoying it so much that is so special.  Thank you again for posting it.

EDIT:  I just managed to pick up a double CD made from 2 LP's, I am promised that the sound is A1 and I am looking forward to receiving it.  I can also download from Tesco, I find Jim Glaser's voice especially amazing.  Incidentally how many of them were there?  They had another clip on UTube where they showed all these Glaser men and I didn't recognise one from your original clip

I hope you will be happy with your CD when you get it squiggle.

Like you, I loved the Everly  brothers.

Tompall and the Glaser Brothers and the Everly brothers have special places in my collection.

I quite liked the Statler brothers, but they always sounded like a "put together" group and lacked a natural feel and sound  for country music.

Yes, I have seen the Glaser being used (or rather MISused) too. Maybe it was meant to be a compliment, but it can be misleading.

There were 3 brothers - Tompall, Chuck and Jim. I think Chuck  had a stroke which affected his vocal chords  and singing in later years.

I do agree with you about Jim voice.  Incidentally Jim used to be a backing singer for Marty Robins and sang backing on his big hit El Paso.

I am thrilled that you like them so much squiggle. Their harmonic "togetherness" is wonderful and the overall effect is a very pleasing sound.

I am on a roll brisket, I have downloaded a lovely album from Tesco of Jim Glaser's songs Me and My Dream.  All the tracks are great, it is in MP3 format but I don't have an MP3 player I store them in that format on my PC, it is very old but it has great speakers and the sound quality is ace.  I have running through my head I'm Sending You A Big Bouquet of Roses but frustratingly I can't find it for sale or download anywhere.

I love love love that clip of them when they were younger and have bookmarked it.  How they weren't huge huge stars I will never know.

squiggle   - we have a major coincidence   - I too have had "I'm Sending You a Big Bouquet of Roses" in my head all day.

It's great that you have found a nice Jim Glaser album and that you'll be able to hear it with good sound.

I understand they were very popular and respected in country music circles, but at their height country was quite a specialist thing and hadn't spread into the general stream.

I too adore that clip. I often view it.

Well done squiggle

I suppose, but what fascinates (and irritates) me is that I have never heard of them, and I am a great country music fan (and a harmonies fan too as you can tell)  I know that Jim at least was touring over here too, what was I down a coal mine or something?

I have tried Effie but no luck, I was so lucky to be able to get The Lights of Albuquerque which is brilliant, and I got that for free but I would be thrilled to get Man in the Mirror.
