how did you get stuck upstairs bb?

I'd gone upstairs for something in the early evening and when I came to go back down my stairlift had conked out. I phoned the emergency service engineer but the nearest one is based in Glasgow which is two and a half hours drive from me.

The problem was that the stairlift was at the top of the stairs and was blocking the way and my husband couldn't get it to move using the manual key provided. He couldn't get to me and I couldn't get down. I often have to go to hospital as an emergency admission because of my medical condition and I started to panic, also what if there had been a fire? There was no way for anyone to get me down the stairs and out of the house with the stairlift blocking the way.

My husband messed about with it for ages and finally got the stairlift to move around the first curve of the stairs and he was then able to manually fold it up so he could get past. So with his help and with the help of gravity I was able to get down the stairs to where my powered wheelchair was waiting for me. What a relief that was. I stayed awake during the night in my living room and the service engineer set off from his home at 6.30am this morning and repaired my stairlift so I was able to get to my bed at 10.30am this morning.

I am still very scared in case it jams again while I am upstairs. It brought it right home to me how precarious it is to have to rely on battery-powered aids such as a stairlift, my powered bath seat, and my powerchair to live my life on a daily basis.
I'm glad everything is sorted now, the equipment is such a boon isn't it mate, but a nightmare when it goes wrong!

Having said that my boy got stuck in the hoist at school last week, they couldn't manually get him down as it is against every health and safety rule they have(in fact one child died after being manually lifted in a devonshire school a few years ago) so they had to wait for help, my boy decided he rather liked it and spent half an hour giggling until help arrived!

Meanwhile I slipped up and told the physio I had a bad back and now I have been given a telling off for not using the hoist for him at home etc! Blush

tell the one that offered you ÂĢ80 that you were offered ÂĢ125 by the other lot, and would they like to match it. Wink
