I've seen that chap on a number of wildlife programmes. The first was one where he got up close and personal with brown bears.

It was the mention of bears which made me think EC was talking about Gordon.

Upstart Crow ...now

Loving how Ben Elton's effectively taking the mickey out his own musical theatre work!

Other than the TV work and books, I was not aware he wrote musical theatre as well. I thought it was more a nod toward present day MT and the gay element as portrayed in the episode. You live and learn.

AFAIK, Elton has worked on four musicals: he wrote the book and lyrics for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "The Beautiful Game"; the book for the Queen musical "We Will Rock You"; the book for the Rod Stewart musical "Tonight's the Night"; and he also co-wrote the book for "Love Never Dies", the follow-up to "The Phantom of the Opera".

His work with Lloyd Webber got mixed reviews, but he really got panned for "We Will Rock You". I remember one critic writing that the only problem he had with "Mamma Mia!" was that it gave people like Ben Elton the false impression that writing that sort of compilation musical was easy, and TBH he had a point. Elton wanted to include the song "Killer Queen", so he just created a character called Killer Queen. Want to include "Seven Seas of Rhye"? Easy - just invent a location called the Seven Seas of Rhye. It's lazy stuff, but to his credit (and rather amusingly), Elton lampooned that by having Shakespeare do the same thing.

Another nice little self-reference at the end of tonight's episode was when Shakespeare's daughter said that she no longer liked Thomas Morely because he'd sold out. Why? "Because he did a musical!"

As an aside: perhaps even less well-known than Ben Elton's musical work is that of Stephen Fry. Back in the 80s, he wrote the revised book for "Me and My Girl"...

I watched the first episode but it wasn't for me.

It can be a tough watch and won't be for everyone, Yogi.

I may rewatch the first episode just for Margaret Atwood's cameo...

BBC4 Search for a new Earth and bloody Stephen Hawking

Search for a new Earth FGS - we've barely explored our own

It assumes ours is beyond saving in the future even though our technologies are progressing to the point where we can.

What has Hawking given to science to move the game forward?

Controversial theories on black holes back in the 1970's which by 2003, "consensus among physicists was growing that Hawking was wrong."

I'm not saying he's contributed nothing - but nothing worth the interest he garners.

HOLD ON HE IS A CHARLATAN  - and a buffoon

Here we go . . . .

"As part of another longstanding scientific dispute, Hawking had emphatically argued, and bet, that the Higgs boson would never be found.[182] The particle was proposed to exist as part of the Higgs field theory by Peter Higgs in 1964. Hawking and Higgs engaged in a heated and public debate over the matter in 2002 and again in 2008, with Higgs criticising Hawking's work and complaining that Hawking's "celebrity status gives him instant credibility that others do not have."[183] The particle was discovered in July 2012"

I wanna see Higgs tw@t him one  ... for charity of course
