Meant to ask last week, but forgot...

Is anyone-else watching "The Living and the Dead"? The second episode's on BBC1 tonight at 9pm.

Watched the first episode and thought it was very creepy.    Like "Ripper Street" it also has a nice grasp of a society undergoing change, but I was still a bit concerned that it's going to turn into a "ghost of the week" show. However right at the end there was the suggestion of a major twist in the story arc...

I have to say that I didn't find the second episode quite as gripping as the first (I saw the opener shortly after watching "The Conjuring 2" at the cinema, so that may have had an effect    ). However, it was still felt very sinister and I'll be sticking with it (there's only 6 episodes in total).

I didn't mention it previously, but "The Living and the Dead" is written by Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, two of the three behind "Life on Mars" (mind you, they also wrote "Bonekickers", so it's not a totally ringing endorsement!   )

In the spirit (*ahem*   ) of their earlier shows, there was a short but very clear indication in episode 2 of the widening-out of the story that I mentioned was hinted in episode 1.

Be aware that if you're going on to iPlayer, you'll find that the whole "box set" is already available. I'll still be watching on BBC1, so no spoilers please if you decide to binge-watch!

For the same reason, be careful if you're scanning through any other TV sites or forums for info on the show: I had a quick glance on IMDb and most of the threads were from people who'd already watched the whole series. I did catch a few spoilers, though TBH nothing that I hadn't already suspected and not enough to ruin the series for me, but still: be warned...

Final episode of "Power Monkeys" on C4 tonight at 10pm!

It crosses BB (and the football if it goes into extra time) , but it's probably worth recording: I didn't see any of the newspapers or news sites acknowledge it, but last Wed's episode correctly called that Gove would stand for Tory leader - which (if we are to believe Gove) means that they predicted it hours before he actually decided himself!

Were Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton therefore responsible for Gove staying up late, contemplating stabbing BoJo in the back?

Thanks a millionEugene, much appreciated . I loved Life On Mars... especially series 1... the whole unsettling strangeness if it. Maybe I'll wait to see what you think of ep 3 before I delve into this.

It crosses BotS (if anyone's still watching that...   ), but some FMs may be interested in tonight's (Friday's) "Artsnight" on BBC2 at 11pm.

It's a tribute to Carla Lane, with some promised "rarely seen interviews of Carla discussing her life and work".

Good shout Eugene, I never watch bots so this is worth putting on my radar.

Don't see Cosmo around at the moment, but...

One of the teams on "Only Connect" right now is a group of three female cocktail-drinkers who've called themselves the "Cosmopolitans"...

Do you think there is the smallest possibility that... No, I'm being stupid, surely our Cosmopolitan would not be on Only Connect. Would she?

Meant to post this earlier:

Bit of a multiple heads-up, as because the Olympics is just round the corner a lot of major drama series on the BBC are coming to their conclusions.

Tonight (now!) sees the final part of "The Secret Agent".

Tomorrow (Monday) sees the last ever episode of "The Musketeers" (be aware, given that the penultimate episode was only last night). Apparently there's going to be a postscript at the end to wave goodbye to the final series.

And Tuesday sees the final episode of "The Living and the Dead".

I see C5's got a new series of "Suspects" starting on August the 3rd.

- With some big shocks from the start, by the look of it!

Shameless *bump* for this, as the new series starts at 10pm tonight - right between CBB and BotS - so some FMs might be hanging around...

I watched it on Catch Up, thanks for the reminder.

I watched Suspects today , and while I enjoyed the storyline , I found the camera work annoying !

"Suspects" USP has always been its "realism" - both the fly-on-the-wall style (shaky-cam, etc.) and the semi-improvised dialogue.

The thing about the new series is that they've tried to keep the series fresh by broaden things out a bit, but in the process (and without going into spoiler territory) we're now being shown "behind the scenes" incidents which the main characters wouldn't be privy to, so the "realistic" presentation now seems redundant at times.

Having said that, IMO the series does deserve some kudos for turning Fay Ripley's leaving (which could potentially have killed the show off altogether) into an opportunity to go off in new directions...

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Channel 4 right now. Or Channel 4+1 if you are reading this less than one hour from the start of the film.

As I mentioned on the live CBB thread, I'm about to go on holiday for the next couple of weeks, and I don't expect to be posting much in that time. So - a few heads-ups from glancing through next week's Radio Times:

New series of "Ripper Street" starts Monday 9pm BBC2!

It's apparently set three years on from the last one, and it looks like there's a central case running throughout the series.

Thought about putting this in the "Movies" thread, however...

For those who hadn't heard of Brie Larson before she won the Oscar for "Room", BBC2 are showing the wonderful "Short Term 12" next Friday at 11.05pm (it crosses the final BotS, so you might want to consider recording it.   )

Larson plays a social worker at a children's short term care facility (hence the title): think "Tracey Beaker" for an adult audience.

Thematically, there are strong similarities between "Short Term 12" and "Room": overall, they're both hugely uplifting films, but be warned that the subject matter can be tough and difficult to watch at times.

Oh, and make sure you have a box of hankies handy for the story about the shark and the octopus...

The ad looked SO cool Baz. I really should give it a go!  I've loved Michael McFadyen in anything I've seen him in. And Jerome Flynn in G.O.T. is a joy to watch... his expressions are priceless

Is it worth watching right from series one, please anyone?
