Well, I was glad to see Marianne Jean-Baptiste back on our screens, but yeah: not exactly a likeable character...

Good actress to make you dislike her so much (I imdb'd her - haven't seen a single thing she's been in!)

She was good in Secrets & Lies  but she's just shouted & hammed her way through this.  And her defence was a crock!

I've just realised I've got six episodes of Secrets and Lies on my Tivo box.   I might delete it now... or leave it a bit longer to calm down before I watch it.

She's probably best known for the US TV series "Without a Trace", but to me (and other Mike Leigh fans on the forum - including Cosmo!) she'll always be Hortense from "Secrets and Lies".

"Secrets and Lies" the Mike Leigh movie - not the TV series of the same name...

I loves me a bit of Mike Leigh, Eugene;  Tim Spall has put in some good work for him.  Liked him as *forgotten the name* in Life is Sweet.

Most odd!

Kaffs..!  Watch it

The failure of "Mr Turner" to get any significant award nominations at either the BAFTAs or Oscars - and in particular the lack of nominations for Timothy Spall - is one of the great scandals of this year's awards season, IMO...

I'm not up to speed with Mr Turner I'm afraid.  I do think that Leigh being a prickly sod doesn't do him any favours with those that 'matter'.  Then again, I doubt he really cares - as long as the public like him, I'm sure that's proof enough.

Can't remember if I've mentioned it before, but I met him once at a special screening of "Topsy-Turvy", and he was quite charming. My friend egged me on to approach him at the bar afterwards, and I've still got his autograph stashed away with my copy of the DVD. Mind you, I was there as a fan, not a critic...

Not that I'm aware of, no.  What a lovely story - and you got a couple of mementos too    Was the screening at the Bafta building?  I'm only asking (and being on topic) as I went there and was a bit disappointed with the layout in the reception area (bit higgledy piggledy).  The auditorium was good though   Would've been a bit odd if it wasn't...

Oh, and I'm still mourning that Leigh and Steadman divorced, btw.

No: it was - perhaps rather oddly - at the Everyman cinema in Winchester. I think the screening was organized by Classic FM, and many of the audience were there because of Gilbert and Sullivan rather than Mike Leigh, so it was quite an interesting mix.

I've just caught up with 'the casual vacancy' - Im still not liking the adaptation for tv.I think the book  has suffered abridge too far maybe.

The casting and acting is first class though the nasty, waspish character Julia McKnezie plays with just the right amount of passive aggressive is quite brillaint

First up: I have not read the book. I was aware that the ending had been changed for the TV adaptation, and I had a look through the book's plot synopsis on Wiki after watching the final episode.

Although I understand why they might want to soften the ending a bit, I got the distnct feeling (even before I'd googled the synopsis) that a lot more had been thrown out with the bathwater. The events shown were certainly dramatic, but (without going into spoiler territory) I'd been expecting a lot more. The previous two episodes had suggested something along the lines of "An Inspector Calls", but then they seemed to pull back from a full exposÃĐ andcondemnation of the characters.

I would agree that it came across as rushed and muddled.
