she can take the risk of not getting one but if they do decide to make a spot visit (very rare) she'd have to prove it's only DVDs she's got on the telly and as most tellies are digital, the lack of an aerial socket may not be enough to put them off

If they have a TV in one communal room then only once licence is needed and they can share the cost

Bloody hell the BBC sure know how to make their money.

I would get all 4 girls to chip in for 1 licence then play dumb if they are ever caught.  but that's just me

Thanks everyone  she was on the phone for over an hour last night, she seems ok not overjoyed, her flat mates seem to be keeping themselves to themselves and she's been stuck in her room, don't think she's had much chance to get to know everyone on her course yet, don't think she likes doing stuff for herself either  she was bemoaning the price of food to me  she hasn't bothered making her bed as she's just going to get back in it  she will settle eventually

Aims, according to the link I gave you, she does need a licence if she is watching  tv via the computer, ipad etc

"Students need a TV Licence to watch or record TV programmes, irrespective of what channel they're watching, what device they are using (TV, computer, laptop, mobile phone or any other), and how they receive them (terrestrial, satellite, cable, via the Internet or any other way). If they don’t have a licence they risk prosecution and a fine of up to ÂĢ1,000.

In some cases students and flatmates will each require their own separate licence for the TVs in their rooms, and in others one licence may be sufficient for all flatmates, regardless of the number of devices in the property. This will depend on the number of licensable places in the property."

"If a student is sharing a house with other students and uses a TV in their room, but the house can be treated as one licensable place shared by all, then only one TV Licence is required (a joint tenancy agreement would usually be evidence that the house is a single licensable place for this purpose)."

I researched this thoroughly when my son went to uni. The BBC are sneaky! They purposely don't explain this very well! Rexi is right.....watching on a computer/laptop is fine as long as it's not "live".

Plus...the TV licence spot check people have no legal right to enter your home....unless you invite them in

Having said that, I've paid my TV license for the last two years even though I have no TV and NEVER watch live TV on my laptop...... so if anyone quibbles, tell 'em I've paid her share

I really should get round to cancelling my license.  Pure laziness is costing me money.

Do you think they will believe me if I said she's using a ducks share

I'm the TV version of Aimee and her white goods. I can't remember how I broke my last one.... but the one before that was death by helium balloon.

I gave up in the end, and I really haven't missed it

Although actually, we have just bought one.... but it is currently living in my son's room (He nagged me into it, in preparation for GTA V. You need a huge screen for that apparently ). I would need to buy a roof top ariel or invest in Sky before we could use it for anything else but games though.

I'm alright with it so far as I'm used to her never being in or staying with her dad, grandparents etc, she's very out going but seems to be struggling a but, I thought the independence would do her good to, she's coming home at the weekend for her birthday so I think she's using that as her target, it would have been better really if she stayed a bit longer before she came home

I love telly too, and of course when I travel abroad it becomes obvious how superior our telly is.
However I didn't watch it during the later stages of education, preferring to go out and watch bands, drink beeyore, smerk tabs and have a wonderful time. There is a huge gap, and sometimes when they mention classic series, or particular actors...... I have no idea.
