To help me from trawling the net does my daughter need a license for her TV at uni or can the 4 sharing the flat have one between them?
Also her TV has an inbuilt DVD player can she watch DVDS without having a license?
Thanks for any help

if they have individual tvs in their rooms they will each need a licence which will cover DVDs so she's OK on that score.
If they have a TV in one communal room then only once licence is needed and they can share the cost
if she only watches just DVDs and not telly then she wouldn't need a licence but sometimes they do check and if she can't prove that the TV is disabled for watching TV she could end up with a fine - my friends daughter did
Thanks pengy they all have tvs, she's only been watching dvds as she said she can't find an aerial socket in her room (more like she's not looking) I didn't even think about a license

she can take the risk of not getting one but if they do decide to make a spot visit (very rare) she'd have to prove it's only DVDs she's got on the telly and as most tellies are digital, the lack of an aerial socket may not be enough to put them off
This link might help - you might need to scroll down the page to get to the relevant bit.
Think Pengy and Yogi have covered all the points ...but hope your daughter is settling in ok Aimee

Bloody hell the BBC sure know how to make their money.
I would get all 4 girls to chip in for 1 licence then play dumb if they are ever caught. but that's just me

Thanks everyone she was on the phone for over an hour last night, she seems ok not overjoyed, her flat mates seem to be keeping themselves to themselves and she's been stuck in her room, don't think she's had much chance to get to know everyone on her course yet, don't think she likes doing stuff for herself either she was bemoaning the price of food to me she hasn't bothered making her bed as she's just going to get back in it she will settle eventually

Do you know what ?
Provided she doesn't watch telly programmes on her telly she doesn't need one. If she wants to watch telly get her to watch on her computer, using the uni wifi! Providing she isn't watching live tv, but is watching catch up, ie ITV Player etc, she will not need a licence.
Thanks Rexi I'll let her know
Could you also let her know that i have absolutely no idea what-so-ever
Thanks Rexi I'll let her know
Aims, according to the link I gave you, she does need a licence if she is watching tv via the computer, ipad etc
"Students need a TV Licence to watch or record TV programmes, irrespective of what channel they're watching, what device they are using (TV, computer, laptop, mobile phone or any other), and how they receive them (terrestrial, satellite, cable, via the Internet or any other way). If they donât have a licence they risk prosecution and a fine of up to ÂĢ1,000.
In some cases students and flatmates will each require their own separate licence for the TVs in their rooms, and in others one licence may be sufficient for all flatmates, regardless of the number of devices in the property. This will depend on the number of licensable places in the property."
"If a student is sharing a house with other students and uses a TV in their room, but the house can be treated as one licensable place shared by all, then only one TV Licence is required (a joint tenancy agreement would usually be evidence that the house is a single licensable place for this purpose)."
Aimee to be honest I would just pay the ÂĢ139.50 TV licence for her in her name rather than have all this piddling about because she's covered what ever she does (don't forget this includes radios as well) I would rather pay that amount than be fined ÂĢ1000
Now what have we learned?
We are totally clueless
I researched this thoroughly when my son went to uni. The BBC are sneaky! They purposely don't explain this very well! Rexi is right.....watching on a computer/laptop is fine as long as it's not "live".
Plus...the TV licence spot check people have no legal right to enter your home....unless you invite them in
Having said that, I've paid my TV license for the last two years even though I have no TV and NEVER watch live TV on my laptop...... so if anyone quibbles, tell 'em I've paid her share
I really should get round to cancelling my license. Pure laziness is costing me money.
"You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder".
I'll shut up now But this really gets my goat.....all those students paying unnecessarily.
But yeah, if she wants to watch her TV.....get her one
*shuts up*
The most shocking thing here is that Ducky has no TV
Anyone else not got one?

Do you think they will believe me if I said she's using a ducks share
Thanks for the advice and links, it does seem better all round if she just gets one, I'll have to look about the shared tenancy bit to see if they can share the cost

I'm the TV version of Aimee and her white goods. I can't remember how I broke my last one.... but the one before that was death by helium balloon.
I gave up in the end, and I really haven't missed it
Although actually, we have just bought one.... but it is currently living in my son's room (He nagged me into it, in preparation for GTA V. You need a huge screen for that apparently ). I would need to buy a roof top ariel or invest in Sky before we could use it for anything else but games though.
How do you watch BB
I said to her have you put the aerial in the back of the TV and she said no I left it at home she's so daft
How do you watch BB
I don't!
It says first unread post next to your name Do you have music on instead?

Yeah I listen to a lot of music I do watch stuff online sometimes.
And I know! The unread post thingy seemed to appear like a flash! I'm sure it wasn't there when I got here
Hope you don't mind me asking Ducky but did your son settle into Uni straight away or did it take time? Don't answer if you don't want to
He settled pretty quickly, which was hugely shocking, as he'd rarely been away from home before and is very very very shy. He loved the independence it gave him. Took me a little longer to get used to him being away
I'm alright with it so far as I'm used to her never being in or staying with her dad, grandparents etc, she's very out going but seems to be struggling a but, I thought the independence would do her good to, she's coming home at the weekend for her birthday so I think she's using that as her target, it would have been better really if she stayed a bit longer before she came home
She'll settle Has she started her course yet, or is it still Fresher's Week?
