The problem is, Soozy, that people are grieving in this thread. People who have contacts in Japan. It's really bad form for the bickering to go on in this case, at least in my opinion.  And, since this thread has been reported about a half-million times this afternoon, I don't think I'm alone.

Just a note to remind you all: if you see something you think is really inappropriate, DON'T QUOTE IT--just report it. If you want me to clean it up, I can't do that once it's been quoted.

I haven't received one 'joke' yet, probably because anyone who knows me will know that I wouldn't find anything in such bad taste the slightest bit amusing, each to their own

I feel so sad and helpless for the people of Japan, and for the people we know here who are out there...yes, I have a Friend who works out there as well, he is in Tokyo and has been for years...even though Tokyo hasn't experienced the devastation caused  first hand, the people still feel the emotional devastation....so sad....

At the moment it's relentless for those living through it. The important thing is that we all support them and each other in whatever way we can, and not to just forget Japan when it fades from the news headlines.

It must be terrifying...so unsure of what's going to happen next....

What makes this one of the worst disaters ever is that the eartquake didnt do much dameage or cause loss of life, it was the tsunami that followed, something that maybe have to be put into the equation in future when building structures that can withstand earthquakes. Also in this case they have to contend with a possible nuclear disaster occurring after the incedents that have occurred at the Fukushima nuclear plant. I suppose its the not knowing what will be next for the Japanese people at the moment and not even having the time to grieve for those who are lost or missing.

Personally I think there are many, many different ways of dealing with it. Some have lost their homes and all their possessions but the family is intact. Some may still haVE THEIR HOME BT LOST ALL THeir family. Others will have lost their job and way of making a living ..............................lots and lots are fearing contamination in the atmosphere and really not knowing what the future holds.

Meanwhile there is fuel, food and water shortage on a large scale. To say that there are only two ways of dealing with it is a bit simplistic isn't it? My heart goes out to all Japanese people ...........they are all suffering.
What you have described there are things that people could have lost and yes each person's loss will be individual but I think think the way people react to such losses really does fall into two rather distinct categories.
Well personally speaking - when I have been faced with the loss of someone dear to me I have fallen apart for a while - it really does take time IMO. I seem to remember you in the past being grief stricken at a family loss.

It's not black and white and really not easy to brush yourself down and say 'hey ho' let's get on with it then. These things take time.
I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with falling apart - that would most likely be the way I would react I was merely making an observation on how people have reacted to previous tragedies.

Wasn't there a volcano eruption in the North of Japan, too? Plus, to add to what seems the never ending list of things going wrong, there's the threat of disease setting in by the sewage left after the tsunami.

I also saw a video last night of a girl who claimed to have prayed for one day for something bad to happen to Japan and apparently her 'prayers were answered'. All this talk of 'it's payback for Pearl Harbour' I view in the same light as I do for the Islamic terrorists who go round bombing and killing innocent people. It's not hurting the people who caused the trouble (i.e. the political leaders for example), it's killing innocent people who may not even agree with their country's actions. I have never understood why, if say Bush and Bin Laden wanted to fight, then shove them in a room and let them get on with it. Why does it have to involve the loss of lives of so many and the pair of them are still living quite happily? I know it's a really simplistic way of looking at it but I have never understood the need for war or personal revenge on a population that had absolutely no influence on the initial issues.

Yes they do but it's just not happening that way at the moment. Just seems to be one thing after another....

Agree, and it is something we in the UK should never have to go through. Going beyond the headlines of the news reviews of the nuclear situation are the people that have no fuel/food/water. There is snow there at night and the temps get down to below zero.  What we see on the news must be only a fraction of what the real situation is.
