AFP: Japan nuclear agency rates nuclear plant accident in Fukushima at 4 on 0-7 international scale. Chernobyl was rated as 7, Three Mile Island as 5: 7 – Major Accident 6 – Serious Accident 5 – Accident With Wider Consequences 4 – Accident With Local Consequences 3 – Serious Incident 2 – Incident 1 – Anomaly 0 – Deviation (No Safety Significance) |
Professor Grimes explained that any damage from Fukushima should be limited because the plant shut down as soon as the earthquake hit. The explosion at the plant occurred 24 hours after it shut down - unlike Chernobyl, which was active when the leak occurred. Nuclear expert Malcolm Grimston explained that the actual nuclear core had not become uncovered at Fukushima, diverting a potentially disastrous meltdown. He told Sky News: "We know this is not a nuclear explosion, this looks like the sort of thing that happens when you demolish a block of flats it's about that level "It could be caused by a build up of pressure - it could be fractured pipes." He warned that it was essential to keep the plant cool over the next hours and days to avoid the incident worsening. Reports coming from the country have indicated Japanese officials are planning to write off the plant rather than repair it. Mr Grimston said it now seemed likely workers would flood the reactor building with sea water and boric acid - a good nutrient absorber. "My reading of that is that they are going to write this plant off, because with sea water in there, that will cause corrosion, and the boric acid will be practically impossible to remove," he said. Japan generates around 30% of its power from about 50 nuclear plants. |

On the Fuji TV report just now: a woman had been at work when the quake happened while her husband was at home with their two children. She went home to find that not only her house, but her whole neighbourhood had disappeared completely. Just washed away. Her husband, her kids and everyone she knew have gone.
Horrendous.
Hard to comprehend.
Hard to comprehend.

That's beyond awful - you simply cannot begin to imagine it can you? And that's just one human story no doubt there'll be countless others too.Heartbreaking.

oh God, thats awful, I just don't know how you would begin to deal with something like that. I was just watching the news and they had some before and after pics of Minamisanriku - the town where 9,500 people are unaccounted for. They were just awful, everything was gone

I agree. It's unbelievably devastating and upsetting. Originally Posted by PeterCat:

They're going to cool it down using seawater, which will make it impossible to re-use the plant afterwards.
The three people who were affected by radiation will be treated with iodine. This is because the main radioactive substance leaked was radioactive iodine. Iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland. So to prevent the thyroid absorbing too much radioactive iodine, if the people are dosed with ordinary iodine, as the thyroid can only absorb so much iodine, the ordinary iodine absorbed will reduce the amount of radioactive iodine absorbed. The rest of the iodine will just get passed out of the body.
Radioactive iodine has a half life of 8 days. That means that the amount of radioactive iodine absorbed in the thyroid is reduced by a half in 8 days, then half of what's left in a further 8 days and so on unless there is a negligible amount left.
Radioactive iodine will kill off part of the thyroid. This can lead to an underactive thyroid, which is readily treatable with thyroxine supplements.
Some 15 years ago I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. I was treated with radioactive iodine to kill off the excess thyroid. Obviously I was only treated with enough iodine to deal with the excess thyroid. As a result, any risk of thyroid cancer is minimal.

The Safety Agency are now saying that the number of people exposed to radiation could reach 160.

Now they are saying there's an emergency at a second reactor at the nuclear plant.

It was good to hear that the containment vessel at the nuclear plant was undamaged. God knows how they would have coped with this scenario ( re-Chernobl ) Originally Posted by Jonesy:

They're now saying it's " likely" there's been a meltdown in at least one of the reactors.

At the risk of bringing up a thread that caused controversy last w/e: as sentient human beings, that's what we can connect to....one persons 'human' story Whilst at the same time knowing that, that one story is repeated many thousand fold, but, we become somehow most and understandably concerned about the welfare of people we 'know' or 'see'.....Ah well, at least, thankfully, so far, no-one has done an 'ah well they knew the risks' thread but, don't hold your breath, it's SundayOriginally Posted by kattymieoww:

So Japan are being punished some how? I doubt they see it that way.Earthquakes are physical geographic events. Land moves, it always has.

Re; super's comments. I have actually read a few messages online from people who say they know the risks of living in an earthquake zone. That is such a dumb comment: I mean these people and their ancestors have lived there for generations ... what are they supposed to do??? Is everyone in earthquake zones the world over supposed to re-locate somewhere else on the planet. FFS how? We are talking about probably a billion people for goodness sake.
