They were silent about the toxic nature of the waste and still maintain that the waste is safe.... They are a British company and know that regulations will not let them dispose their waste anywhere and risk the lives of people in Britain. So they ship it there...

They are a multinational company, registered in Britain, which is presumably why they are being sued in London, but this is nothing to do with them not wanting to risk British lives - It is ALL to do with money.
But the waste was accumulated in Britain right? If yes then it should have been disposed in Britain.

Just one 20 minute segment on newsnights though? You get what I am saying... This is breaking news material because lives are being lost...

The original story came out in 2007, I think.
I presume that it is in the news again, as the court cases are coming up soon.
No one I know even knew about this back in 07... So it was hushed up... Its taking that long to conclude this case meanwhile lives are being lost...

Im just venting Blizzie Hug not taking it out on you... There is just too much injustice in the world.

No, it wasn't from Britain.

If you read the Newsnight link, above, it says:

The waste was generated as the result of an oil deal spanning three continents. Trafigura bought a consignment of cheap and dirty heavy oil with a high sulphur content. Instead of putting it through a refinery, Trafigura tried to clean it up, using a do-it-yourself method, so they could sell it on at a massive profit.

It was reported on Newsnight in 2007.

I don't think it was hushed up, although I'm sure the company would have loved it to have been.

I think there is just so much going on in the world, that some stories don't receive as much media attention as they should.

No - it was waste which was accumulated by the ship on the ship.

Ok thanks for that... But the best place to dump the waste accumulated on a ship by the ship was Africa? Surely they have the facilities to dispose of the waste.

I agree, they were underhand and as Blizzie says it was about money - the resulting deaths and illness were truly awful.

No one was trying to excuse the action itself, just clarifying to you who weren’t responsible.

and whats all this crap about toxic waste being too dangerous for the uk?.....oh what short memories we have, sellafield has been importing toxic waste for a long time from countries who dont want it on thier soil, remember the huge rows there were about it...no?, well what about the huge leak that was discovered in may 2005 that apparently started in 2004, The solution from the spill was estimated to contain 20 metric tons of uranium and 160 kilograms of plutonium.......yeah, we send it all to africa....in your dreams

I see what you are saying but why would they ship it back to Africa then? If you make your own waste surely you should clear it up.... Not ship it off to another continent at the expense of lives...

as you said cocoa, its money....you compare the cost of recovering anything usable to the cost of getting rid of it and letting someone else do it, but i'd rather keep all the electronic waste and send the radioactive rubbish somewhere else but it aint gonna happen....
