Is this really fair? These toxic wastes are shipped from European Countries to Africa and dumped there... How is this helping Africa? This is really sad.

I dont know the story but it sounds about right, nothing surprises me any more
It will be on the newsnight on BBC at 10pm...quote:Originally posted by Gypsie:

This is really sad... The self-rigtheousness of these countries and this is what they do on the low.... God will punish them for this...
It's not fair at all, it's similar in China, there are whole villages of people who have tumours from all the toxins that are in their water supply which comes from factories manufacturing cheap western goods.
And no one is doing anything for these people... Its because the government who dictates the politics of the world are the ones doing it....quote:Originally posted by faerykelstar:

Exactly. It's terrible. We can just try to not create such a demand for the industry but it's a really difficult issue to tackle.
Its not really that difficult.... We are all humans surely if the waste is toxic for British people it will be toxic for Africans or are Africans not human beings too?quote:Originally posted by faerykelstar:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:And no one is doing anything for these people... Sorry cocoa eyes, I meant myself, I don't know what to say to do about it. As for the government, I think their attitude is 'not in my back yard'. But it's not just happening in Africa, but many of the under-developed countries too.

That was an absolute shocking report on Newsnight.
I hope the company get sued into oblivion for what they inflicted on those poor African people and all because they wouldn't dispose of the waste in a properly controlled manner because it was too costly!!!
We've been dumping on our own door-steps for years...no suprize we do it readily on others.
It had me in tears so I guess the company doesnt class Africans as human beings then... The sad thing is no one seems to be doing anything about it just because it is in Africa... Now I know if the case was reversed it would have been a different story... The hypocrisy amazes me... I do believe in Karma and Nemesis... It may not be in this life time but it will come...quote:Originally posted by HyacinthB:quote:Its not really that difficult.... I dont think so.... The wastes dumped on these developing countries are toxic i.e cancer-causing, miscarriage-inducing, sickness-causing type of waste... But since its Africa no one cares...quote:Originally posted by Heatseek:

I know what you meant hun, it was just a rhetorical question... I guess these people really do see people from developing countries as less than human....quote:Originally posted by faerykelstar:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:Its not really that difficult.... I only saw the beginning of this programme, so don't know all the facts.
I understand that it was decided that it was too expensive to make this waste "safe", so the owners sent the ship to Africa. In which case, they must have had to pay someone in Africa for them to dump the crap there. They couldn't have just docked there, unloaded on to trucks that then went and dumped this stuff in the most suspect of places without permisssion. (I mean a fish farm? Who in their right mind would dump toxic waste at a fish farm?)
So there are two lots of people to blame here. The owner of the toxic waste, and the people in Africa who accepted the shipment, and said they could dump it there, and then not checked where it was being dumped. It's no good them saying they didn't know what was onboard either, cos they should have thoroughly checked.
I, too, hope the company is sued so heavily that they really feel it, but can't help feeling there must be some corrupt people in Africa too, to have accepted this shipment.

Yes they are corrupt people everywhere... but for a fellow human being to think that waste is toxic for him and his people and to go to all that length to dump it in another persons land is pure wickedness and they believe the people in these developing countries are less significant than their own people...quote:Originally posted by Jenny:

I know what the case would be if Africans dump toxic waste on British soil....

Oddly enough, until recent years that was the case here. Not by Africans grant you but by ourselves. I can think of one old asbestos works near here where several feet of earth are being removed, but in the old days they didn't bother. I know of at least two top right housing estates which have been built on old metal foundry and waste sites. People scrabbled to live on them. Imagine their surprise in twenty years when the Quacks tell them there is something wrong with their livers.
The company is being taken to court in Holland, by the Dutch authorities, for falsifying papers etc., and sued in the London courts, by the people in Ivory Coast affected by it.
I'm not sure we should be blaming governments, as if this is actually allowed by them. It was illegal and whoever made the decision, based it purely on greed. They didn't care what happened, once it got to Africa, as long as their costs were kept low.
Disgusting!

It truly is Bizzie... these people act like Africa is not on earth and that the people are not humans.... They will get what will come to them if not now eventually.... My problem with this issue is why no one is saying anything about it everything is hushed up and kept out of regular news but when its time to bash Mugabe we are force-fed that 24hrs/7days a week....quote:Originally posted by Blizzie:

Yes thats why they decided that Africa is the best place to dump their toxins , they know no one will say anything because nobody really cares about them...quote:Originally posted by Garage Joe:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:

The UK is a powerful country and can defend themselves and best believe this will be splashed all over the news...quote:

The British thing happened a while ago, and it wasn't splashed that much, or more peeps in this thread might have remembered it.
I'm not denying the world uses Africa as a dumping ground for waste (mostly with the permission of corrupt leaders over there, sadly), but it does happen here too, and people in the North East aren't too happy about having hazardous waste dumped on their doorstep either.
Im not denying the fact that there is corruption involved... What im saying is that someone thought that it would be a great idea to ship their toxins over to Africa because it would be too toxic for British people...quote:Originally posted by Demantoid:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:The UK is a powerful country and can defend themselves and best believe this will be splashed all over the news...quote:

Nobody is happy with waste being dumped on them but surely the "West" have the technology to dispose of their waste why dump it in an improvished continent.... I guess no one cares about that... A similar thing also happened in Nigeria and Ghana recently by a British Company..
It's all a horrible mess, pretty. I don't understand why countries who make the pollution shouldn't also be responsible to mopping it up.
The other thing that galls me is huge companies who open factories in poorer countries and ditch all the safety rules they'd have to observe if they opened similar factories at home.

What do you mean by 'no-one will say anything' and âno-one caresâ PCE? You refer to âBritainâ and the âWestâ as though the dumpers were doing this with an entire populaces blessing. If itâs the media you have issue with then maybe you should make that clear - I often feel thereâs an undertone in your posts that the entire country is inherently racist.
I never saw the program but I think the government of the country which these wastes get dumped have to agree and get a lot of money from the country sending waste and also have the say were it is dumped ,toxic waste has been getting dumped in different countries for years but like I have said the African government must have agreed or it would have been illegal.
It is sad Dermantoid really sad thats why they all go over to China and india because they know if they open their factories in the west they would have to obey the regulations. Sadly no one is fighting their corner and the parties in the developing countries are just happy to get work not knowing the potential consequences.... Earth is earth whether its Africa, Asia, America or Europe so if they think polluting Asia and Africa will prevent the pollution of their land, they have to think again... It will eventually end up in the West it may not be now but it will eventually get to the West.quote:Originally posted by Demantoid:

You are the one that brought that up not me..... Its pure wickedness to think that just because a country is lacking in development it is the perfect place for toxic waste.

Why would anyone have an issue with the media over it?
The media don't dump toxic waste and if they didn't report it, we wouldn't know.
Yes there is corruption I agree to that but in the case of the Ivory coast, Nigerian and Ghanian countries, they have sued the companies and have won millions of pounds but that money will not cancel out the damage (present and future).... My question is why did they pay out the monies if they knew that they had an agreement with the African government?quote:Originally posted by Marguerita:

The media don't dump toxic waste and if they didn't report it, we wouldn't know.
Iâve no idea, it was the repeated âno-one cares about Africaâ sentiment which I found confusing/alluding. I wondered, so asked, if it was the media (and not just âthe westâ in our entirety) who were being criticised (PCE commented that âno one is saying anything about it everything is hushed up and kept out of regular newsâ).
What I said was that the media fails to report the wrongdoings by the west in these developing countries..... I know they are bosses up there who decide what to be reported and this cases are swept under the rug.... But if this was reversed it would be a different matter altogether....
No one likes to talk about things like this though so I guess the injustice will continue.

It's nothing to do with someone deciding that it was too toxic for 'British' people, though.
Originally, it was taken to Amsterdam, but they were told that the clean up costs would be far higher than they thought, so decided to ship it somewhere else, hire an African company to get rid of it and turn a blind eye to where it ended up.
It's a British-based multinational company, but this was not a British decision, as such.

If it had been theyâd probably have dumped it in Scotland

They were silent about the toxic nature of the waste and still maintain that the waste is safe.... They are a British company and know that regulations will not let them dispose their waste anywhere and risk the lives of people in Britain. So they ship it there...quote:Originally posted by Blizzie:quote:Originally posted by pretty~cocoa~eyes:

They are a multinational company, registered in Britain, which is presumably why they are being sued in London, but this is nothing to do with them not wanting to risk British lives - It is ALL to do with money.
