Greater Manchester Police have apologised after appearing to celebrate a five-month jail sentence handed down to a mother-of-two for taking a pair of shorts looted during the disorder in Manchester.

Ursula Nevin, who slept through the riots, took the shorts from a ÂĢ629 haul of clothing and accessories stolen from the Vans store in the city centre by her housemate Gemma Corbett.

Nevin was arrested for handling stolen goods after police raided the flat in Stretford. She was jailed for five months after pleading guilty at Manchester magistrates' court.

Following her conviction, Greater Manchester Police posted this message on their official Twitter account: "Mum-of-two, not involved in disorder, jailed for FIVE months for accepting shorts looted from shop. There are no excuses!"

Poster HeardinLondon was among those who criticised the force:"@gmpolice Your celebratory sentencing tweets are promoting hatred, divison & putting your officers in more danger. Think before you type."

The police force later deleted the tweet, posting this apology on the social networking site: "Apologies for any offence caused from last tweet. Comment was not directed at individual person. Thanks to all for feedback messages – all your comments have been noted. You are right, it is not our place to comment on sentences."

Brake down in community......what is the answer?....

Years before the "riots", we have seen "Kids" on the street, jumping on cars, intimidating people in their houses, driving people to despair.....

People frightened to confront rowdy youths, because people have died doing so....

What is the answer?.....

Jobs?.....Technology has seen a lot of those fall by the wayside....

Syd

A visit to Chessington's toilets on Thursday made me think.............

I paid over ÂĢ37 for my ticket plus parking (along with my daughter and two grandchildren and hundreds of others).........only to find a smelly loo, without toilet tissue............

Why don't they employ and pay a good salary to people to keep them clean.....In my opinion an important job, a job to be proud of.....

Best toilets EVER are at Corrieshalloch Gorge in WesterRoss.

They are basically in the middle of nowhere, a brick built building. About 6 cubicles each for both male and female,

Spotlessly clean, nice fresh smell, hot and cold running water and always seemed to have freshly laundered towels. plenty of soap and no overflowing bins....and they were free too. There was a donations jar, but you never felt coerced into donating, as you do in some places.

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

CHOICE NUMBER1 - over 10000 apprentice's available-only paying about a ton a week-but better than the dole and you learn a trade-come home feel satisfied that youve achieved something, feel a bit proud

CHOICE NUMBER 2 - rob, sell drugs, turn to crime-join a gang-the moneys a lot better and its easier

ANSWER-idle bastards, no ambition, no future,no idea of the way they are f*cking up the country that serves them so well

Exactly, so it is up to us, employers, and employees to see it as a valid and important job....(that cannot be done by technology)

well-i know some people see me as a bit of a div-but this has hit home to me-nice country, lots of greenery, lovely castles and heritage not to mention free education, free health care, free homes, free benefits if needed and people go cranky and abuse the place that helps them-to me its total madness-i cant justify kicking in a shop to get what you want, i have to save like most others

It all boils down to respect doesn't it.

If the people who are lucky enough not to have to do the "menial" jobs, truly respected those jobs as having worth.....then more people would be willing to do them...and those people already doing them would maybe feel less worthless.

I think the whole of society needs to think carefully about the things they say, and the way they demean people, if we want things to change (I'm including myself in this). Can't see it happening sadly....

people can see it as a valid job...   but that doesn't stop it being a soul destroying mind numbing job for the person thats doing it.

It IS a valid job..    but come on, imagine getting up every morning to go & clean the loos at Chessington..  the Queens job might be mind numbingly boring at times... but the loo cleaning job is rarely gonna be anything but!

I wouldn't do it..   NOT because I feel it beneath me, but cos, to be quite frank it would make me gag!     But I have done so called menial work... unskilled work..    sometimes its tolerable because of the people you work with, sometimes it pays relatively well & that keeps you going...   but cleaning the loos at Chessington..   I am failing to see how far the validation of others to the jobs worth would go in terms of day to day motivation!

I am saying that a job (any job) well done.........should be acknowledged and paid well......

I agree with that bit ^^^   (although there are a mulititude of issues around the paid well bit..  but a fair days wage for a fair days work type thing.. yes)...

I think you were pushing it by using the loo cleaning job as your opening example.

oddly ducky thats the word that causes the most trouble!

Hahahaha! And when I saw that gobby teenage girl using it as an excuse to rob and steal a few days ago, I was sat here chuntering "you don't know the meaning of the bloody word"

She did have a point though.... it is important (still no need to smash windows and set fire to stuff just cos you're miffed that you don't get enough of it mind you).

But then in someways I kinda understand where she's coming from....my neighbour has no respect for my rights as a cat owner....and I could quite willingly shove a burning paper plate or two through her letterbox at the mo..... (I'm not expecting many of you to understand this bit.....just ignore me)

Why?...don't you like your public toilets to be clean at all times?..........I know I would appreciate it and would expect the people "employed" to oversee it to be paid well (maybe a bonus because of our grossness)..

Only this country doesn't serve them well. The people f*cking up are the MPs who will get away with either nothing or short sentences, never mind bankers who have now given themselves bonuses of millions again less than a year after we bailed them out. How does anybody expect kids, who aren't taught well enough to do their three Rs, to understand the concept of community and responsibility? People who think the way I do are always dismissed as bleedin heart liberals, but the only way you can have a contented country is if you take everyone into concideration.

I agree with all that...    but you were implying that if this job was respected by people, & paid well, that this would be the kind of job to entice a young person from the life of benefit claiming or crime.

Its not the job I would use for the "lets motivate our young people" poster campaign!

Is that wanting to be taught though?  you can't pin the blame on the teachers

Don't twist this...     I have no idea why someone would do that job..   in fact they have my respect because they can do that job (there are a few jobs I personally feel like that about)..

But that isn't what you were initially saying....  you were using that job in the context of getting unemployed & ambitionless young people into the workplace....
