Evening all
Whoever said up there ^^^^^^ that Magistrates can sentence for 2 years; is that a change then? As I've always thought that they could only sentence up to 6 months and that anything more serious had to be referred to Crown.
I know that there have been loads of changes but that one must have slipped me by. Also, they have already sentenced some of the rioters? Was that for this weeks offences or were they on licence for other stuff and it's been revoked?
Seems very, very quick to get them charged, at court and sentenced
From WIKI:
. Magistrates can only sentence for six months for one offence and twelve months consecutively, they can also give a maximum of a ÂĢ5,000 fine; community orders which can include curfews, electronic tagging, requirements to perform unpaid work up to 300 hours or supervision up to three years and or various other options. Magistrates hear committal proceedings for certain offences, and can establish whether sufficient evidence exists to pass the case to a higher court for trial and sentencing. In more serious cases, magistrates have power to pass 'either-way' offenders to the Crown Court for sentencing when, in the opinion of the magistrates, a penalty greater than can be given in the magistrates' court is warranted. A wide range of other legal matters are within the remit of magistrates.
There have been a couple of rioters at court today, they got sentences of 10 and 16 weeks, (I think). Looks like they are going to whizz this lot through the system.
Edit: forgot to say Hi Veggie.
