Not been an EE watcher for a long time. I thought it was pretty standard soap fare. Adam Woodyatt has two more emotions than Roger Moore.

 

You see so much of this type of thing on TV oner the years. Even the typical soap trick of the contrast of life and death with the puppy. A bit telegraphed to the audience.

I agree with you about Adam's performance. There's a lot I've not liked about the scripts and some of the actors performances but there's a few there that with the right script don't just act but react appropriately to the storyline. Adam is one who does that when it's a heavy storyline.

As a very longstanding Eastenders fan, it hurts me to say I broadly agree with EC on this. It may be a reaction to all the hype, but I wasn't anything like as impressed by the episode as I'd expected to be. I thought Woodyatt was really good, but otherwise it felt rather cliched, especially Lady Di deciding to give birth at that very moment as EC says, the contrast with the happy pub, etc.

 

The only thing I will give them credit for was the nice touch of - for once - making a conscious decision to not announce the big news in the Queen Vic...

I thought the ending was very sad

I felt that showing two opposing storylines re Lady Di and Adam's is a reflection of the duality of life. While some are celebrating others are grieving.

One little nugget I picked up on tonight...

We now know why only last week EE invented a shoplifting conviction for Lucy: it was so the police would have her fingerprints on record and thus be able to give an immediate identification...

Must say all the pub stuff got on my nerves, I think the whole episode should have been just the Beales, I was surprised at the lack of crying by Jane and Denise

       
       


Very convenient who do you think the killer will be?

I watched Eastenders for the first time in 18months and thought Adan Woodyatt was brilliant. In the final scene with Ian and Peter, I thought their pain was palpable and it had me in tears.

I don't like any of the Carters or their storylines, apart from Shirley and Lady Di, lol. I think there's going to be an episode with only Adam and the family. Personally I thought Jane and Denise were in too much shock to react with tears at this stage.

I think Thursday's episode will concentrate on the Beale household.

They've taken over the show, I was starting to think they should change the name from Eastenders to The Carter Family

 

As I've implied in other threads, I've learned from experience not to trust EE's writers to be entirely logical when it comes to plotlines, so Im not convinced there's much point in trying to work it all out. However I do have a suspicion that it's eventually going to turn out to not actually be murder: probably an accident, or perhaps an argument that got out of hand. (Although that theory could change drastically later in the week when we find out what forensics have come up with...  )

I mentioned in an EE thread the other day about her body being near a large fallen branch. In the long shots I can't see any other fallen branches, so is it just a coincidence that that's where she died, or seeing it was mentioned tonight she had trauma to the head somehow the branch caused her death Someone else could still be involved if an argument took place, if so maybe it was an accident and not intentional murder, just my thoughts at the moment until the storyline moves on

Yeah, I noticed the branch too, and it's part of the reason I was thinking along the lines of an accident as well.
I have to say though: if it turns out that we wait a year only to discover she was killed by a falling branch, there'll be a lot of very angry viewers out there (and I'll be one of them)...

If the branch is what killed her I think someone from the Square was there who she went to meet after receiving the phone call that night, we never saw who it was from. Maybe an argument got physical and she hit her head on the branch, staggered a few steps then fell and died.

That's similar to the Emmerdale storyline though

I suppose there's only so many scenarios the writers can use to kill someone off, bit silly though to use a similar storyline to one that's ongoing in another soap, that's if it's recent and not an old one they think the viewers have forgotten lol.

Everybody who lives in the pub gets on my last nerve, it is the reason why I stopped watching EE.

Brilliant episode. The standard of acting is on a different level to the other soaps imo.

Nick Cotton is my prime suspect... He obviously wasn't in that coffin!! Was he Lucy's dealer?? Did she discover his deceit? Is killing her a way to punish Ian for knocking over the coffin and almost foiling his fake death plan?? Remember that the first ever episode kicked off with a murder by Nick...and it would bring Ian and Dot together for anniversary storyline as the two longest serving characters.

 

Or maybe the fake (???) Charlie Cotton for similar reasons!!

I agree completely EL, fine acting and really heart wrenching.  I certainly had tears in my eyes and like you it will stay with me.

That's exactly the sort of thing that made me stop watching it... happy pub scene while something sad is happening, they do it all the time. It just got boring and predictable and they drag story lines out for so long that I just didn't care any more by the time they did their big reveal and always found it a massive anti-climax, e.g. who killed Archie Mitchell, Dirty Den etc.

I'm surprised there haven't been any comments about tonight's (Thursday) episode. I thought it was an absolute corker: all set in the Beale house, everyone close to cracking... The first 5 minutes contained no dialogue other than Peter saying "Dad"... Cindy getting both barrels for some imperceptible slight... Ian's face when the foresnic blokes entered in their bunny suits...

I thought the no dialogue was very good
